Sweet Star Temptation[]

I. Bliss Elegy

The coming of spring in Sakurajima is always accompanied by the blooming of the sakura blossoms.
Flower petals sink on the wind just like a flurry of snow.

"Ah, spring is almost here again..."
A breeze blew in, shaking the windchime in the corridor into letting out its clinking chime.
She stuck a hand out the window to catch a falling sakura. Her motion was gentle and slow, as beautiful as a painting.

But through her eyes, aside from the beauty, I saw a complicated thing...
What was it?

"Edamame? What are you looking at?"
As if sensing my gaze, she turned her head and called to me softly.
I shook my head.
"Nothing, Master Attendant..."

I was summoned during the sakura blossoming season.
At the time, Attendant held me tight, as if holding a very cherished relative.
When she smiled at me, I could even see a tear in the corner of her eye.

But after that day, I never again saw her smile like that.
That kind of smile that came from the heart.

...Perhaps it was because of those oddball servants in the courtyard.

The birth of a Food Soul meant that the Attendant would be protected, and that they would be kept safe.
So I was always on my guard around those kooky retinues. They walked around every inch of the courtyard, but I never saw Attendant ever say anything to them.

I was quite scared of them. The way they looked at me had this ineffable emotion to it.
Or maybe it was... hatred.

Why... doesn't Master Attendant leave this place...

Even though for me, the happiest times were summer nights, laying on Master Attendant's lap and drifting off to sleep to the drone of the cicadas—
as long as I had Attendant around, no matter how long the night, I never felt lonely.

But...

"If you could, where would you like to go to have some fun, Edamame?"
One night, I was laying with my head on Attendant's lap as always, falling asleep, when I suddenly heard this question.

"I... don't want to go anywhere. I just want to stay by your side, Attendant."
"The outside world is full of amazing things. One day or another, Edamame, you'll have to leave me..."
"Why would you think that, Attendant? Because you don't want to see me? Because you don't like me anymore?"
"Silly child. That's not it..."

Faced with my question, Attendant merely patted my head gently.

She was always trying to get me to go out and see things. Every time she talked about the outside world, her eyes shone with a glow that wasn't usually there.
If she yearned for the outside world so much, then why... did she not leave here herself?

*Dong—dong—*
The bell on the wall issued forth its usual deep toll, which echoed around the room for a long time.

"Edamame, time for you to go."
Again...

Every night, Attendant would apply thick rouge powder and heavy lipstick, sometimes also lighting musk and jasmine incense, letting the wispy scent suffuse through the air.
But she never let me stay in the room.

Was Attendant keeping something from me?
Was it something to do with that look deep in her eyes that I didn't understand?

"Master Attendant, can I... not leave today?"
"But... Edamame, I have something I need to do now..."
"What... is it?"
"Um..."
The way Attendant stumbled over her words made me even more suspicious.

"But I want to stay here... with you, Attendant."
"Edamame, behave..."

*Knock-knock-knock*
There came a knock outside the door.

"There's no time... hurry."
Before I could react, Attendant had opened the door to the attic and shoved me in.

"This attic leads out to the roof... Promise me that you won't come down until you hear the windchimes on the door eave. Understand?"
Master Attendant trembled as she clasped my hand. Her hands were icy cold, and the look she gave me was practically begging.
"...Okay. I understand."

Before Attendant closed the attic door, I saw a strange man swagger into the room, and after there was a bunch of knocking and thumping sounds.
Who was he? What was... happening?

I wanted to go out, but then I thought of the promise I'd just made to Attendant.
I can't... be a disobedient child... I promised...

After thinking for a long time, all I could do in the end was climb out alone onto the roof.

The night breeze blew over me, also blowing away the smell of jasmine that had wreathed around me, but my feelings didn't feel much more relaxed.
I stared out at the boisterous street lined with lanterns. They lit up the glory of Sakurajima, but also obscured the shine of the moon and stars.

"The first plum blossom..."
Faintly, I heard a moving song coming from a nearby street corner.

"...flower stages, birds in cages, first meetings and their grim presages..."

Her singing was so graceful and moving, and yet why did it sound... so tragic too?

II. Bird in a Cage

Following the sound of the voice, I looked toward that street corner. The people there were laughing and having fun, seeming to have forgotten all their troubles. The laughs and the songs poured forth ceaselessly.

Would it make Attendant feel better to see such a sight?

*Ding-ding-a-ling—*
The sound of windchimes came from below, along with the sound of a door slamming, but I was so excited to share this sight with Attendant that I didn't pay it any mind.

"Master Attendant!"
"Edamame..."

But the moment I saw Attendant, the smile froze on my face.
She was slumped down on the tatami mat, and on her neck were several alarming red scars.
Hearing my voice, she quickly covered her neck with her clothes, and then mustered a smile.

"Master Attendant, are you hurt?"
"No, I'm fine. What about you, Edamame? What's got you so happy?"
"I... just saw a really interesting place just now. If it's possible... I'd like to go there with you, Attendant."
"Oh, really? What place?"

I described everything I just saw from the rooftop to Attendant. But then Attendant changed from her normal demeanor. Not only did she not encourage me, but I could even see panic in her eyes.

"Shhh—"
Master Attendant pulled me to her and put her index finger up to my lips, warning me to stop talking.
"Do not mention that place. And do not talk about what happens there. If someone were to hear..."
"But..."
"Edamame!"

She spoke in a hushed, but forceful tone.

Did I say something wrong?
Or was it that Attendant had something more important that she was keeping from me?

I thought of the song I'd just heard and muttered under my breath, "birds in cages..."
"Wh-what did you say? ...Why would you know about Bliss's song?"

Bliss? What was that? Was it the place that I'd just seen?

Why was Attendant so nervous? What was she saying? And that man who just came into Attendant's room...

For the first time, I felt a sense of alienation between myself and Attendant.

*Sshhhooom!*
The door was suddenly pulled back, and standing in the doorway was a richly-dressed man. He was staring indignantly at Attendant.

I seem to have seen this man before.
He was the one just now that Attendant was trying to hide me from...

III. Waning Lantern

"What are you doing back?" Attendant's voice was shaking.
"I can't come back? This is my house. Is it your place to tell me what I can and can't do?"
The man's eyes were like a blade sweeping by, and when they landed on me, he looked at me like he would a worm.

"Please, allow me to explain... ahh!"
Without a word, the man shoved Attendant to the ground. The next second, his foot stomped on her feeble body.
Once... twice... three times...
I scrambled up and grabbed the man, but he threw me aside. And what he said next rooted me to the spot.

"Explain? You think I'm deaf?! I heard everything! I paid a steep price back then to buy you away from there. I give you good food and fine clothes, and what? You're not satisfied? You want to go back to Bliss?"

What... was he saying?
Bliss? What connection did Attendant have to Bliss?

"Please... it's not like that..."
"Don't you think just because you can summon this little whelp that you're so high and mighty! I'm the only reason you are where you are today! I think this little whelp has allowed your little head to get too big for your shoulders!"
With that, he turned and walked toward me.

"Edamame, watch out!"
But before I could react, the man swung a fist at my head.

I smacked against the ice cold tatami, then was suddenly overcome with a dizzy spell, and my vision went blurry. All I could hear was Attendant's sobbing cries and the man's curses.

It hurt so much.
...Was there nothing to be done?

"You listen up! For the rest of your life, don't you even dream of escaping from my hands. You are nothing but a puppet to me!"
I struggled to my feet and saw the man striding toward Attendant again.

No, he can't...
Maybe it was my Food Soul instinct to protect my Attendant, but I flew at the man and chomped down on his hand. He cried out in pain.
"You dare bite me, you little whelp!" Seeing his fist land on my body, Attendant rushed forward and tugged on the man's hand with all her strength.

"Edamame! Run!"
"I..."
"Run, Edamame! Get out of here! Go to Bliss! Find a person named Junmai Daiginjo! He'll tell you what to do!"
"Neither of you two are going anywhere today! Ahhh! How dare you scratch my face! Hey! Stinking little whelp! Don't run—!"

As I watched Attendant cast off her usual elegant and gentle demeanor and fight ferociously against the man, I grit my teeth and darted out the door.

Food Soul though I am, I was too weak, and I knew...
...I couldn't protect her.
And since that was the case, Daiginjo... Mr. Junmai Daiginjo... please... please...

The warm red lantern lights drove away what should have been all-encompassing darkness. This place called Kabukicho was lit up like daytime, but the men and women coming and going made me feel scared.

But thinking of my Attendant, my mother, all of the fear dissipated like scattering clouds.
Right now, there was only one thought in my mind—protect her.

"Junmai Daiginjo, Junmai Daiginjo..."

Tears blurred my eyes, and my feet seemed to lose their strength. But then, when I felt like I was going to fall the next second, a hand suddenly caught me.

"Little imp, why are you calling my name?"
"Eh?"

I looked up: before me was a coquettish looking man, but one who seemed to bow to no one.
If... if I could be as strong as him, perhaps I could...

Tears overflowed the rims of my eyes, and I grabbed Daiginjo's sleeve like a drowning person clutching at straw.

"P-p-please! Please! S-s-save my mommy!"

I yelled it out with all my might. It was... a loud and ringing voice that had never before escaped my throat.
Perhaps my voice even echoed throughout the whole of Kabukicho, but right now, all I could hear was the sound of my heart pounding in my ears.

Now, thinking back on it, I understand—
Master Attendant, my courage... was a gift from you.

IV. Half Hardships

Several days later, Mr. Daiginjo told me that he'd smoothed over the matter with my Attendant. He would set her up in a little room next to Kabukicho. As for that man, he probably wouldn't ever give her trouble for the rest of his life.

Attendant was saved. She finally had freedom.

"Oh, yes, little scamp: your mommy sold you to me. From now on, you will work for me in Bliss," Junmai Daiginjo said teasingly.
"..."
"What? Are you dumbfounded with heartbreak at the news that you've been sold?"
"No. I know that... you're joking. Master Attendant... wouldn't do that kind of thing..."

Master Attendant is a gentle and kind person.
She could never sacrifice me for her own self-interest.

"...No fun." Not getting the reaction he had hoped for, Daiginjo lost the urge to joke. "You really are a lot like her."
"Oh?"

I learned from Mr. Junmai Daiginjo that Attendant was once a courtesan in Bliss who was later bought away by a wealthy merchant for a steep sum.

But after being bought away, she did not receive the love and freedom she had wanted. Rather, she was imprisoned by the merchant in his courtyard.
Out of loneliness, Attendant summoned me.

Attendant was never able to leave the courtyard, so she hoped I could go out into the world and look around.
In her eyes, I had a future without limits and freedom without end.
She didn't want me to relive the life that she had.

So every time the rich merchant came back, Attendant would always send me away. But that day, the merchant had just come back home to pick up something he'd forgotten the night previous, and so he overheard our conversation, and then...

"Oh, yes, there's also this."
Mr. Daiginjo's voice cut short my unhappy reverie.

He tossed a letter at me, thin and seeming to have a lingering, familiar warmth upon it.
"That woman asked me to give it to you. Have a look for yourself."

Master Attendant...
I nervously opened the letter. Inside was only one line—

"Edamame, go and do what you want to do—"

What I want to do...

"Mr. Daiginjo!" I plucked up my courage and said, "Mr. Daiginjo, since you helped Master Attendant... I'm willing to repay you—by staying on at Bliss."
"But as a Food Soul, obviously you'd prefer to be by your Attendant's side, no...?" Mr. Daiginjo was a bit surprised.
"Master Attendant told me I should pursue what I want."

And what I wanted was to become strong like Mr. Daiginjo.
Strong enough to protect the people I wanted to protect.

V. Edamame

From that day on, the regulars at Bliss discovered that there seemed to be a new girl on the premises.
She seemed to rarely emerge from the back courtyard, occasionally sticking half her body out from behind a door, cautiously prying at everything happening in the main lobby.

"...And that is?"
Mackerel Ichiyaboshi pointed in confusion in the direction of the back courtyard. No sooner had he cast a glance in the girl's direction than she slinked off like a cat, laving behind a temari ball, still bouncing on the ground like something out of a ghost story.

"Heh... she's my most recently hired help. No need to be nervous."
Daiginjo gave a smirk and swished the pot of wine around as he topped Mackerel Ichiyaboshi off.

Time flowed on, fleeting as an arrow, until before anyone knew it, another year had passed.

"Hey! Girl! Two more orders of grilled squid!"
"G-got it... Coming right up..."

Tonight, Bliss was as packed to the gills and as lively as ever.
After receiving the head chef's command, she emerged from the back kitchen with two trays of grilled squid and proceeded to the main lobby of Bliss.

"Woah! The wee lass makes a bold appearance tonight!"
"Long time, no see. I feel like Edamame's gotten cuter again."
The tipsy customers called out jocularly at Edamame, whose face instantly turned crimson.

"Uh... please, everyone, don't make jokes with me like that..."
Edamame's angsty and shy demeanor was currently a highlight among the sights to be seen at Bliss.
"That's enough, gentlemen. Edamame is still a wet-behind-the-ears little whelp. If there's something you need, you should still come to me."
Sometimes, Junmai Daiginjo would sometimes step forward like this and come to Edamame's rescue.

Although—
"Ugh... I'm not a little kid either. Stop calling me little whelp all the time..."
After closing, Edamame leaned over the bar, her eyes squinting as she slurred out this protest.

"Just a little whiff of alcohol and you're already tipsy, and still you say you're not a little whelp..." Daiginjo laughed resignedly.

"Mr. Daiginjo, say something. Why are you ignoring me...?" she complained to a potted plant beside her, tripping over her words.

"Mr. Daiginjo..."
"Yes?"
"Mr. Daiginjo, all day long you're either drinking or loafing around... and I just don't understand... is that all it takes to become strong...?"

Upon hearing that, Daiginjo at first wanted to reach out and give Edamame a good pinch on the cheek.

"And also, work is so tiring... Why is there so much to do every day? Whether it's the back kitchen or the front desk or the lobby, it's always never-ending..."

"But honestly, I really like this life I've got now..."

And so, Daiginjo withdrew the hand that was about to pinch her and gave her a light pat on the head as the corner of his lip perked up a bit.

"Heh... a little whelp indeed."

Edamame still had a long way to go toward her aspiration of "becoming a strong person".

But that didn't matter. The day would come sooner or later.
