I will use these chains to drag the demons back to hell.

Bio[]

A cold and dark exterior, with an extremely pure personality. He doesn't seem to give a care about anything, but he's actually quite kind and easily moved and just won't admit it. Because of an extreme inner sense of justice, he has no sympathy for evil people. However, sometimes he can be too black-and-white and seem to lack nuance.

Food Introduction[]

Scones are a form of English quick bread and an iconic Western pastry. The name comes from the storied Stone of Scone used during Scottish coronation ceremonies. Traditional scones are triangular, but over the passage of time, scones have taken on all kinds of shapes.

I. Consequences

“His Excellency the Director truly is the most powerful. It only took him half a day to settle the problem. It stands to say the Garcia family has the final word in Cerro Town, right?”

“Not only the Director, you also seem favored by God, young master Benson. With your strength and good luck, you’ll probably face no adversities in life!”

“Hahaha, you have a good eye and are a smooth talker. I’ll ask my dad to find you a good job at the company some other time.”

“Such generosity! No wonder everyone speaks so highly of your work in the Public Security Bureau. Thank you, young master Benson! Thank you!”

The two young men chatting in a dimly lit corner leaned against their seats, their postures relaxed, as comfortable as they could be in the middle of a swamp. Soon both raised their hands, not to call for help, but in celebration as the alcohol intoxicated them.

And the consequences of it would soon be revealed.

I rub my freezing hands and step into the quagmire, following the wet tracks from the rain inside.

The most relaxed and inebriated guy in the corner quickly recognizes me, his hazy eyes momentarily frozen in shock, but soon his smugness is back, and he looks at me from top to bottom in contempt.

“Oh wow, we haven’t seen each other in what? Three years? Aren’t you still wanted, though? Are you sure it’s okay for you to be walking around like this, officer? Or rather… ex-officer.”

There was a scoff on the other side, but I could see it was more like a jab than an actual attempt to contain a burst of laughter. To me, however, those sounds were no different from those of insects on the roadside.

So noisy.

I lower down my still dripping wet hoodie and approach him.

“Did you steal Danqi’s annunciator?”

“The one you said was used to send distress signals? That thing can save your life, officer, everyone protects theirs very well so how would I know where one is hidden? Don’t spout nonsense.”

He covers his mouth exaggeratedly, with an expression on his face that is more akin to a confession than a denial. I discreetly clench my fists.

“You have access to the central control room in the Public Security Bureau. You could very well have turned off the security system and snatched Danqi’s annunciator from its safe place… Indirectly killing him.”

“Tch, how anticlimatic… Are you done yet? Get out of here before I tell on you. Just let me drink in peace.”

In a fit of anger, he kicks the table with the front of his shoe, spilling wine all over the floor. A waiter quickly comes to clean up the mess but ends up getting prickled by a shard of glass from a cup that was broken in the act.

I look at his wounded hand as he struggles to pick up the pieces and suddenly a familiar voice rings in my ears.

“A security officer’s duty is much more than just arresting criminals. We must do everything in our hands to help those who are facing difficulties. This is not something they teach you on the training grounds, but that you must always keep in mind.”

I can still clearly remember the look on his face when he said those words—He was leaning comfortably in his chair, spinning a pen between his fingers, and he spoke in a leisurely tone as if he was just talking about what he wanted for dinner.

Unfortunately, we would never be able to enjoy a meal together again, as his ashes now lay inside a jar.

The perpetrators are still clamoring.

“Oh, if you’re here today it’s because I went easy on you back then and spared your life! That guy Danqi, on the other hand, died too easily! If it wasn’t for that bastard, I would already be deputy!”

BAM—

Before he finished his sentence he fell from the chair, his limbs sprawled out like a lump of animal skin nailed to the ground by a hunter.

“Shut up.”

Squeezing the chain in my hands, I look at the insect under my feet, the soles of my shoes crushing that odious throat.

“You don’t deserve to say his name.”

Upon seeing this situation his colleague quickly flees, leaving behind the young master he had just praised to the stars and beyond.

Cerro Town is a small place with only a couple hundred people. Soon, the familiar sounds of sirens came from outside the window.

My time was running out.

I pick up my chain and aim the blade at his face which had already turned purple.

Compassion is reserved for those who show remorse.

As for those who do evil deeds but refuse to admit to them—

I’ll gladly smash their teeth, open their esophagus and stomach, use sulfuric acid to corrode their skin, and let their blood and juices blend from their flesh until…

They have thoroughly understood the taste of sin.

II. Fugitive

Someone stopped me before my blade penetrated that nauseating flesh.

“Please, let me do it.”

It was the waiter whose hand was prickled just now.

“I came here just to kill this man.”

The young man swallows his saliva, his eyes are firm but he seems a little nervous. His bloody hand held the blade, trembling slightly.

Only now I notice his long and unkempt hair, he was obviously not a real waiter. His hands were pale and slender, and I could see bits of bright paint under his nails. Perhaps he’s a painter.

“This dirty scumbag of promiscuous nature, he took my sister’s… he took her…”

He chokes up and holds the blade tighter.

“But because he’s the son of the Director of the Public Security Bureau, the bastard easily got away with it! If the justice of this world cannot punish him properly, then I’ll do it myself…”

The young man opened his eyes, red with hatred. His pupils were blown wide and he gripped my blade so firmly he could almost rip it from my hands. I gather my composure, take back the blade, and make him step behind me.

“Don’t ruin your life for this kind of person.”

Tightening my fist, I quietly listen to the cries under my feet, face and body now covered in thick bloodstains.

“This sin… I can bear it alone.”

Before the officers arrive, I make my way to the door, leaving bloody footprints behind.

Outside the sun is already hiding behind the clouds, and the sky feels so desolate that it looks like it would fade away. I can only distinguish some vague dark blue lines that contour the horizon, casting a soft glow in the dimly lit alley.

I hide on a street corner until the footsteps of my pursuers gradually disappear, then finally open a dilapidated door under the shrills and cries of the crows. The foul and moldy smell instantly hits my nose, as if taking just one sniff would embed sheer despair into my bones.

Fortunately, Danqi would no longer be troubled by such things.

He can rest assured now.

Because I got the culprit, that Benson.

I will never let demons like him roam around freely.

CLANG—

My trail of thoughts is cut short by the sound of metal clanking. The inside of the house is pitch black, so it takes me a while to discern my surroundings and set eyes on the person hidden in the corner, tightly clutching an iron rod.

Although I have never seen that face before, the world has a general derogatory term for people like him—Tramp.

Perhaps this is his territory, and honestly, it was never my intention to trespass, that was merely a last resort…

For people in a weak position, comfort is a synonym of threat. When you’re faced with such a situation, you should try and convince them that you’re also a weak person. Don’t show too much weakness though, or you might get jumped on…”

The familiar voice in my mind comes to a halt, its tone apologetic and prideful.

“Hm? The way I explained it, was it too hard to understand? Well, it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter, I’m sure you can do it. After all, you’re the Food Soul I summoned!”

I stare at the homeless man and slowly move to the opposite corner, lifting my cloak under the light of the moon.

In order not to hurt those human officers, I could only conceal myself in the face of their attacks. That’s why this body was left with some gruesome bruises.

Noticing that, the man on the other side seems to finally calm down and visibly relaxes in his spot. He is but skin and bones, as if he has never eaten in this lifetime. The wariness in his eyes slowly fades, and he looks more curious and hopeful now.

I rummage through my pockets until I find a simple biscuit wrapped poorly in a napkin.

It was made by Madam herself, and Danqi roughly wrapped it before shoving it in my hands… It was the last thing he left for me.

Throwing the biscuit to the homeless man, I started dressing up my wounds that would occasionally open and bleed. Finally, I curl up in my corner and close my eyes.

If Danqi were here, would he praise me for doing the right thing? Or would he get angry at me for giving away the biscuit made by his wife?

Either way is fine. If only he could be here… Either option would be fine…

CLANG—

The iron rod was gently placed on the ground and everything became silent again.

There was no praise nor anger. If I close my eyes, though, I can still hear it.

Danqi’s heartwrenching cries in a sea of fire.

III. Justice

As Danqi’s Food Soul, I admit that I caused him trouble since the beginning.

“What is an officer?”

“Officers are like… Superheroes that fight for justice!”

Seeing my lack of response he froze on the spot exaggeratedly, cleared his throat, and slowly retracted his outstretched arms and legs.

“If you’re interested, you should give it a try. We’re about to start training the new recruits at the Public Security Bureau, so the timing is just right!”

He raised both his thumbs and smiled at me as if he were modeling for a promotional poster for the Public Security Bureau. Though I couldn’t understand why he looked so happy as I still had no clue of what is an officer…

The word “justice” really stood out to me.

I nodded in agreement and Danqi hugged me excitedly, slapping me on the back several times.

“From now on then, we’ll be colleagues. No… partners!”

Although I couldn’t see his expression, his voice was laced with unadulterated joy. The feeling of being around Danqi was always akin to the warm sun touching your skin after the rain. I could almost see a bright future ahead, surrounded by light.

But the unfortunate truth is that I was too simple-minded back then.

A week after I became an officer, Danqi called me to his office. I felt confused, I had never seen him with such a serious expression before.

“Why did you hit him?”

“He was the one who bullied me first…”

“So you went out in the rain without an umbrella for that? Do you want to pick up a fight with God too?”

I only clenched my fists and said nothing. He and I clearly had different opinions on the matter.

“Do you even know who you beat up? The Director’s son! Before today I had only done meritorious deeds and was never once punished. But because you hit that guy, the Director called me to his office and rattled my ears out for three hours straight! You, ah you…”

He was so angry that he punched the table, then closed his eyes and shook his head.

The look of disappointment on his face made my chest tighten. He clearly knew who the Director’s son was, but he equally knew who I was, so how could he just scream at me without asking for the whole story…

“Why did you only punch him once?! If you wanted to teach him a lesson, you should have beat him more!”

?

What?

Seeing my surprised face, the corners of Danqi’s lips slowly curved in a smile, as if everything was just an act until now.

“I’ve disliked that brat Benson for a long time, but what can I do? I’m more than 10 years older than him. If I hit that guy, wouldn’t it be like bullying a kid?”

He was now leaning on his chair, spinning between his fingers a pen he’d said was given to him when he became an officer himself and that by now the paint had all worn out. His expression had turned back to his usual leisurely one.

“Was he neglecting his duties again, or was he abusing his powers?”

“…He was bullying the recruits in my class.”

“That definitely warrants a punishment, however… It’s not your place to punish him.”

Danqi came closer and put one of his calloused hands on my shoulder, warm and heavy.

“First he has a superior, then there’s his father, and you can’t forget that you’re also his junior. What’s the difference between a Food Soul attacking an ordinary human and the strong oppressing the weak?”

“But how could I just watch while he did cruel things? That’s not justice at all.”

“I know, I know, he’s a bad person and it’s only natural to want to punish the bad guys. But we’re no wild animals, we can’t fight violence with more violence. If we reproduce that kind of behavior, we’ll only create a vicious cycle. Even for hunters, there are better methods to catch their prey.”

Having said that, Danqi suddenly paused, and the corners of his mouth once again curved to form a sly smile. I wasn’t sure what he was up to, but one day, as soon as I arrived at the Public Security Bureau, I heard a commotion coming from the Director’s office.

As it turned out, the Director’s son should have been promoted to Deputy Director that day, but because he received a joint complaint from citizens tired of his behavior, he ended up being demoted to a simple officer.

The joint complaint was, obviously, proposed by Danqi.

“Did you see what I did? He has been causing trouble for these people for much longer than one or two days. I only gave those poor victims a voice. Besides…” He winked at me, “He brought it upon himself.”

I caught a glimpse of a scratch on the corner of his eye. Danqi is a careful guy, but if the Director sets his mind to punishing someone, he’ll definitely find a reason to do so.

If only I didn’t fight back…

Probably noticing my gaze, Danqi simply pulled his collar open and pointed at the large bruises covering his collarbone.

“See this?”

For some reason, he seemed almost proud of it.

“Exercising justice always comes with a price.”

I looked at the bruises, and after a long time, simply shook my head and set my eyes on him again.

“Everything you do comes with a price.”

As an officer, while it’s our job to punish evildoers, those on the other side will always resent us. Some also have to bear the outrage and dissatisfaction of their own families, as Danqi does. Everything comes with a price.

“Even so, someone had to do something.”

“You brat. You’re the one who caused trouble first! Why are you acting so cool now?”

Danqi approached me and put one hand on my shoulder, messing up my hair with the other. I had long gotten used to this kind of treatment, and I consciously did not retaliate so I wouldn’t accidentally poke his wounds.

“Go get this treated. If the Madam sees these injuries, she’ll scold you again.”

“Why are you so worried? If she asks I can just say that you whooped my ass.”

His tone was light and warm like the sun slowly rising from the seaside and bringing in a mellow breeze. But the vulnerability he showed me that day still lives vividly in my memories.

Perhaps in that moment, he made me realize that “justice” wasn’t as black and white as I had always thought.

People are not allowed to be too “just”.

If you’re too just, you’ll suffer retaliation from your superiors, you’ll be punched and kicked, you’ll be deliberately assigned difficult tasks, you’ll have your life-saving annunciator stolen, and then…

You’ll be trapped in a fire and meet a painful death.

And I, to catch the real culprit who started the arson and took dozens of lives, pursued him all the way. Instead, I was accused by the Public Security Bureau of being the one behind it all. In the wanted poster, the words “dead or alive” were written in black and white. No one wanted to hear what I had to say.

This is what people call “justice”.

That’s why I chose to step down as an officer.

So that I could pursue my own idea of “justice”.

IV. Revenge

The white cold mist surrounded me, creating a gloomy and damp atmosphere. The unlit alleyway was silent and almost desolate, save for the two guards standing in front of a door, already tired at that point in time, when day became night.

After knocking them both unconscious, I dragged their bodies to a dark corner where I could hide them, sneaking in quietly after.

Following the dark corridor that led to the end of the house, I saw a tall door. While there was someone specifically guarding the entrance, this door was completely unlocked. In other words, the guards were there to prevent people from coming in, not from going out.

When I first started investigating this case with Danqi, we made some speculations. Dozens of people had disappeared for no real reason, but their families never received blackmail messages or the like. Several weeks passed and no bodies were found either, leaving very few possibilities to consider.

A cult.

The missing people might have been instilled with some strange ideas and then “voluntarily” decided to join their group, working for them or even giving up their lives for their ideals.

Just like those who died in the fire with Danqi.

I push open the flimsy door. Inside, dozens of people lay scattered in the moss-covered room, all of them weak, elderly, women, or infants. People who don’t have enough strength to serve, so they become sacrifices.

That bastard, playing with human lives…

“Officer Scone?”

As I step beyond the entrance door once more, a voice coming from behind me makes my movements halt, but I’m incapable of letting go of the child sleeping soundly in my arms.

“It really is you! You’re back!”

For a while, I stay frozen in place, until I’m reminded of who that voice belonged to. It was another officer who joined the Public Security Bureau almost at the same time as me, and who was one of Benson’s victims on our first day.

As it’s been years since we’ve seen each other, I notice how he has lost his youthfulness and timidity, looking strong enough to stand on his own now.

“You helped me long ago, but I never had the chance to thank you… Who is this child?”

“Someone who got lost…”

“You’re still so compassionate… By the way, did you hear the news? Benson is gone! That bastard finally faced the consequences of his actions!”

“Is that so…? And what did the Director say?”

“What can he say? He’s going insane at this point, dealing with the reporters.”

Seemingly noticing the confusion on my face, the young officer lowered his voice and explained.

“Although the murderer was identified, he committed suicide before he could be caught… Are you okay? I know it’s in bad faith, but we should celebrate his riddance!”

He grabbed my shoulders tightly, but the enthusiasm showing on his face did nothing to help my nausea.

“The murderer left behind a bloody letter, accusing Benson of taking his sister’s life. But of course, the Director hid his son’s crimes so he wouldn’t look bad. The impact of this matter was huge, though, and the headquarters issued us orders to thoroughly investigate it. Those father and son are done for.”

His eyes were filled with joy as if we had just been rewarded for a good deed. However, I couldn’t share that happiness, my mind could only think about that young man with red eyes but unwavering determination. Was this the revenge he sought after…?

What a brave fool.

“Also… The real culprit behind the arson that killed Danqi was found.”

“What?!”

That’s impossible. If the real culprit was arrested, why has no one come to rescue these poor victims? Besides, I’ve been after that person for ages, how could I have missed them…?

“Who is the culprit?”

“You know him. It’s the Food Soul summoned by the priest of the Ambley Church, Haggis.”

“That’s impossible!”

Haggis? The Food Soul who was locked in a cell for God knows how long by their master attendant and who once tightly held onto me in fear of being left alone? His master attendant also died in that fire, and so did their contract, it would have been impossible for Haggis to kill him.

And at the time, he was by my side…

“…Is this the justice you claim pride in? You just take anyone as a scapegoat as long as you can finally close the case?!”

The young officer unconsciously took two steps back, completely speechless in the face of my ire.

“If that’s the kind of justice you believe in, I want nothing to do with it.”

Ignoring the officer paralyzed in place, I carried the child back into the room and put them in their original place. If one of the sacrifices was found missing, that devious person would become more vigilant, and it would be harder to catch them.

Albeit having to put these people in danger…

I must catch that demon.

“Why have you been born as a Food Soul in this world? God gave you so much power, but how are you supposed to use it? For destruction? Or for protection…? As long as you understand your position, it doesn’t matter if you think justice is good or bad. I know you’ll make the right choice.”

“I believe in you. After all, you’re the Food Soul I summoned!”

I’m sorry, Danqi.

I truly tried to become a wise hunter, and not give in to the wild animal.

But when you punish someone for a sin, you also become a sinner.

Exercising justice comes with a cost.

There will always be the people who will pursue you till the depths of hell for it.

I prefer it to be me rather than someone else.

V. Scone

Three years ago, having not received his master’s distress signal, Scone arrived too late at the church, the fire already having consumed it.

Although the heartwrenching cries of the people stuck in the flames would chase him for countless nights to come, at the moment he shut out every single sound in order to pursue the culprit who fled by the back door.

During the chase, he realized his contract had been broken.

The cold wind was so unrelenting that he could hardly see ahead.

But he couldn’t stop.

His master attendant could no longer be saved, but future victims could. And he was set on saving those people before that demon got their hands on them.

However, the other party was unexpectedly cunning and used dirty tricks to escape into a foreign court. Scone, on the other hand, was stopped when he reached the city walls and proclaimed wanted by the Public Security Bureau. He escaped with gushing wounds.

None of the wounds hurt as much as the nightmares that haunted him every night, though.

As he continued to help the weak, he would ask for information about the court. It took him a long time, but he eventually learned about the many crimes committed by that demon.

For the sake of his master attendant, and those innocent lives lost, he had to bring justice to that criminal.

“And what evidence do you have?”

The young man finally arrived at the demon’s lair after overcoming countless obstacles, covered in bruises and panting heavily. However, he found himself speechless by that single question.

“I’ll find the evidence sooner or later.”

“Come on… Rather than wasting your energy forcing another Food Soul into submission, it would be easier to just let someone else take the blame… You are clever, you must understand that…”

“Stop talking nonsense!”

“You can believe me or not, but… As long as you foolishly persist in your so-called justice, you’ll never be able to catch me…”

The demon laughed, his blood-red eyes hidden behind the lenses of his glasses shining eerily.

“Why don’t you let go of this useless obsession and join me in the world of beasts?”

Scone didn’t answer but pounced forward to capture him. However, in an unexpected turn of events, it was not the demon who stopped him, but his former colleagues who had just arrived at the scene.

Angry and confused, he had no choice but to flee, given he was still wanted.

Thus began his escape, wading through sewers, running through swamps, stepping on scorching charcoal, but he never once thought of giving up. He could not let that demon win. He would capture the beast like a wise hunter, he would not resort to blind violence like a wild animal.

Until he found out that Haggis had been imprisoned.

The person he claimed he would protect had been hurt again, and in that moment it was like a spell was broken. Scone realized it was time for a change.

A man dressed in rich clothes shook his fan and tried to catch his breath after the fire as he shouted orders to his subordinates, behind him the remnants of what was once an opera house.

“Come on, pick up the pace! Do you want to get paid or not?!”

“But, boss… Yesterday’s wages haven’t been paid yet…”

“So you want to procrastinate, huh? How many times have I told you not to gossip at work? I’ll deduct it from your payment, hear me?!”

As soon as they heard their wages would be reduced, the workers could do nothing but begrudgingly comply, going back to work. The wealthy businessman felt a sense of satisfaction watching the scene, letting out a disdainful snort. He was about to retreat to his cooler and more comfortable room when suddenly he felt something tying his feet, making him unable to move.

“What the hell is this?!”

“Pay them their wages.”

“Huh?”

When he turned around and came face to face with a slender young man, the wealthy businessman only chortled in arrogance and waved his hand as if the other were a mosquito.

“Get out, can’t you see the adults are working? You… What are you doing?!”

“This blade is covered in a poisonous substance. If you don’t pay them properly, you die.”

The wealthy businessman thought it was just a childish prank at first, but as the seconds ticked by he felt something pricking his skin where a wound began to form. The skin around the wound quickly turned a weird purple, and his limbs began to tingle. He looked at the young man in panic, but the other just looked back with indifference, as if he was about to turn around and leave him there.

“W-Wait! Don’t leave! I’ll pay them what is due, just please give me the antidote!”

The young man watched with cold eyes as the wealthy businessman pulled out a large amount of money and handed it to one of his subordinates to distribute among them. After confirming all workers had gotten their wages, the youth threw a small bottle to the businessman.

The man gulped down the antidote in haste, but as he still felt some discomfort, he urged someone to take him to the hospital. Only after he left did the workers finally have time to rest.

“Do, do you remember me?”

The young man turned around and looked at the person in front of him, a scrawny-looking guy.

“If you hadn’t given me that biscuit that day, I’d have died in that small room… I didn’t expect to be saved again by you today, I thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

The man was so excited to see him again that he just kept talking casually, not realizing the young man had to leave as soon as possible.

“You’re so smart, you completely fooled that local tycoon! But how did you make the wound change color? Magic?”

“It was the poison.”

“Eh? It was actually poison?”

The youth nodded expressionlessly, his face devoid of emotion making the other man break into a sweat.

“But then… What if he refused to pay our wages?”

“As I said, the poison would have consumed him.”

As the man stopped talking in shock, the youth turned around and left.

He could see the other person feared him.

It was like facing a wild animal.

He did not care, however. If being treated like a wild animal gave him the means to achieve the justice he believed in, then so be it.

As long as he upheld that justice in his heart brought by Danqi’s compassion and enthusiasm, he would gladly abandon everything else. He ended up helping the homeless person he met once again by pure coincidence, but he wouldn’t let innocent people get in the way of his ideals.

His powers could no longer be used solely for protection.

Unless he eliminated the root of all evil, the problem would never be solved.

Even if he had to resort to violence, he would drag that demon back to hell.

He no longer aimed to become a wise hunter, nor did he look forward to becoming a wild animal.

But he hated that demon.

And he was determined to bear that sin for the rest of his life.

Scone would bring hell to him.
