Food Introduction[]
Golden thread honey dates, also known as capital-style honey dates or northern-style honey dates, are one of Chinese three major types of candied dates. It also goes by the common nickname of golden thread amber. They usually have an amber hue and a transparent or semi-transparent outer layer. When eaten, they can be pulled apart to create long threads of honey-like candy, for which it gets its name. Golden thread honey dates have a pleasing texture and sweet taste, can replenish energy, and are nourishing for the spleen and stomach.

I. Meeting in the Evening Rain
Me and Ms. Orange Blossom met on a drizzly evening. That day, I descended into the world as a Food Soul. When I opened my eyes, all I saw was a gloomy, dark little alley.
"Atten... dant...?" I muttered to myself as I shrunk into a ball. My long, golden hair got wet from the ran and dripped onto my dress. How I wished for a warm hug from a human and a few kind, caring words. But all I could see was... a gloomy curtain of rain.
"Why is... there no... contract...?" Food Souls are born for their attendants, but I was a Food Soul without a master. Under the eaves of a roof, dripping rainwater tapped on clay water pots, making an echo in the empty space, just like my own body, hollow and unwanted.
When I was looking to grab ahold of something, Ms. Orange Blossom appeared. She was holding an umbrella and stepping through the puddles in the street as she sauntered up to me. Her long, jet-black hair was done up in a pretty bun, pinned in place with a golden butterfly hairpin. On her brow, she had applied a fan-shaped floral design of peach blossom hue, and under her voluptuous forehead was a pair of cerulean phoenix eyes.
"...A Food Soul?" she asked bluntly. She was so beautiful and vivid that it made me seem insignificant. To try not to seem too abject, I mustered up a smile. "Gosh, lady, you sure are pretty."
Ms. Orange Blossom's brow knitted into a frown, and a few moments later, she extended an arm, holding the umbrella over me a bit. And so, I followed Ms. Orange Blossom home.
Guests all say that Ms. Orange Blossom is a dancing girl from a foreign land. Foreign dancing girls mostly use their graceful dance steps and stunning figures to become famous throughout the Light Kingdom, but Ms. Orange Blossom is different from the others. She is gentle, peaceful, and always accepting of clumsy old me, cleaning up after my messes. She's like my polar opposite, but also the person I most aspire to be like.
"Honey Date, I... might have something I need you to do for me." Ms. Orange Blossom's voice called me back from a reverie. I walked over to her, but not until I got up close to her did I realize that today she was dressed up differently from before, much more businesslike. "Do you remember that army general that used to always come watch shows here?"
At three quarters past noon, Ms. Orange Blossom had me go out to the front street and stop the garrison general as he passed, not letting him go. In addition, she bade me then go to the north side of the city and find her friend to deliver a message which she told to me. Without hesitation, I did as I was told, because we were the closest of companions. Shouldn't companions have such devoted trust in each other?
At three quarters past noon, I went out to the front street, and sure enough, I saw the army general out on patrol. We bantered a bit, but when his soldiers caught up with us, the general's expression changed. He pushed me out of his way with a shove and stormed off in a fuming huff. I heard someone say that Ms. Orange Blossom had led people into the garrison camp and made off with a large amount of munitions and weapons... And then, she disappeared, leaving me all alone to face the army's wrath.
That night, the army began combing nook and cranny where someone might be hiding. My portrait and hers were hung together beside the city gate. This is the last time to my memory that we ever stood side by side.
II. Fugitive Journey
After that, I had to take cover from the soldiers that would pop up from time to time on the streets. All I could do was furtively seek out some drinking buddies I used to roam the streets with and ask them if they knew about Ms. Orange Blossom's whereabouts. But no one knew. Even the friend on the north side of town that she'd once mentioned never turned up in my searchings. Perhaps... this was a long-plotted operation. But no matter the reason, the guilt for it must be born by her and me both.
The city gates were heavily guarded, so I was forced to flee through some secret passage under cover of night, abandoning the home I'd built up over these years and losing what I thought was a friendship I could trust with my life. ...Perhaps this friendship was just an illusion of my own wishful thinking?
On a night when the first snow fell, I set forth on my fugitive journey. For three whole days and nights, I did not halt my pace. Food Souls don't die due to bitter cold, but the snow piling high made me struggle for every inch of progress, and the fierce wind cut cruelly into my skin. Even my eyelashes turned white with the tundra's frost.
But even though I toiled on the road day and night, the cavalry on their horses still arrived before nightfall. I used threads of honey gold to weave a tight net that blocked wave upon wave of arrow volleys. But the sheer number of pursuing soldiers far exceeded my imagination. I was chased into a nearby valley and hid beside a giant boulder on the banks of a stream, praying that the sound of rushing water would drown out my panting breath.
...But they were not willing to return emptyhanded.
I leaned over to scoop up some water to splash on my cheeks, seeking to wake myself up temporarily, but on the surface of the water, I saw a face not yet willing to throw in the towel. ...I wasn't going to go down here and die all alone.
"She's here!" Discovering something stirring, the pursuing soldiers began to surround me. Just then, the rising sun popped up from over the mountaintop in the east, it's golden sunlight spilling onto my disheveled gold hair. I heard the footsteps of the soldiers slow down. Perhaps they too didn't know how they ought to dispose of me. Seizing this brief moment of lowered guard, I fought back with all my might, but I was only hemmed in by even more soldiers. One person pulled out a long blade and slashed at my neck while I was distracted.
A tiny stone struck the blade to the side.
I looked up in the direction the stone had flown from — in the branches of a snowy pine sat a beautiful young maiden with silver hair and a white dress.
"Pretty lady, can you help me?" I did my best to keep my voice steady and asked with a smile.
She gave a slight nod, and the silent snowy landscape came to life at her gesture. Terrified soldiers surrendered before the mighty power of the Food Soul and scurried out of this valley.
"...Why didn't you give yourself up?" She asked me.
"I can't help it. This little lady can't give up while a beauty like you is looking on~" What I said was true, but also a bit snarky, and a faint blush formed on her pale white cheeks. But she still came right out and told me her name — Bird's Nest Soup, the Mistress of Reverie Valley.
I liked her, not just because she was beautiful and strong, but also because through little things she said here and there, I caught a glimpse of a pure soul unaffected by worldly cares. ...Because she was different from Ms. Orange Blossom. Perhaps... I could trust in her?
III. . Unexpected Change
Bird's Nest Soup took me in and taught me all the skills that a Food Soul should know. I also regarded her as my master and teacher, and sometimes told her about getting around in the world under the guise of a human. She introduced me to her other companions in Reverie Valley. I was surrounded with so many handsome men and beautiful ladies, and every day I was so happy sitting among them, basking in the sun and sipping tea, that I soon forgot about life outside the valley.
But the army general who had been punished for all this never forgot this unsettled score. The general recruited several hundred troops and invaded Reverie Valley in the night. The hooves of his horses treading over the pure, snowy land.
That night, myself, Royal Jelly and the Mistress were the only ones in the valley. I rushed to find her and ask how we should deal with this, but to my surprise, I heard her and Royal Jelly talking:
"...Using Honey Date as bait is the best recourse." Royal Jelly's tone was as cold as ever. He always went about solving problems in as practical a manner as possible. I stood frozen in the doorway, looking at them through the tiny crack.
After a long while, I saw the Mistress close her eyes, but before she could utter any words of agreement, I ran away again.
This time, I fled to the enemy's camp.
"It's only right. This I made this bed, and I should lie in it..." I took a deep breath and slowly walked toward the general at the head of his troops. "I knew I shouldn't have tried to depend... on anyone else..."
Golden amber threads formed in my hand into a long, golden whip. I rushed at the enemy, not hesitating in the least, and before they could process what was happening, I smashed their formation into disarray. Bright red blood flowed down the golden strands, and along with it flowed my own vital force.
But as long as I could break through their encirclement, I could survive— Just when I was starting to feel some hope, an arrow struck me in the back, burying itself deep into my left shoulder. The enemy's reinforcements... had arrived.
"...Ungh... That hurts... Can't believe you'd try a sneak attack... This little lady... will never let you all get away with this..." Each breath brought with it a sharp stab of pain, and tears streamed down uncontrollably. I choked with sobs, gripping my golden amber threads tightly.
No one would ever have my back. So it was the only thing I could depend on.
IV. Ride Out the Ups and Downs
"You idiot! You big idiot! You super, colossal idiot!! Golden Thread Honey Date, you're going to make me die of anger!"
When I forced myself to a standing position, a voice suddenly called out from behind me. Hearing the familiar, scolding voice, I shouted back a retort without even thinking.
"Wh-who are you calling an idiot, Yellow Pea Cake?! If you don't stop yapping, Yours Truly is gonna thrash you!!" "But you are! You're a super-duper-mega idiot! Why couldn't you just wait patiently for us to all gather up?! You forced Mistress to rush out looking for you and get injured!"
Mistress... was injured? I froze, and the hand gripping the whip loosened.
"...Yellow Pea Cake, don't exaggerate. It's nothing serious." Someone gently responded to Yellow Pea Cake for me, her gentle and sonorous voice melting in my ears like a snowflake falling on the tip of my nose, whisking away the panic and fear in my heart. "...I had wanted to stall for time so that others could make it back as reinforcements. I never thought you'd take matters into your own hands."
"Simple-brained fellow." Royal Jelly broke the awkward atmosphere with his deadpan quip.
"Wh-when you two were talking, I was standing outside the door, but... I... I thought..." ...I thought you all didn't want me either.
With these words on my lips, I couldn't help but feel all emotional. With my nose starting to sting, I let out an exaggerated laugh. "Hahaha, that's right. Yours Truly just wanted to hog all the glory! If you've got a problem with that, then try to outdo me!" "...Hmph. If it's competition you want..."
Royal Jelly unsheathed his sword and plunged into the enemy. I gripped my whip again too, but before I could swing it again, Mistress grabbed hold of my hand.
"You're too tired. Rest a while." "No way. I'm not going to abandon my friends in battle. I'll rest off to the side!"
Mistress locked her eyes on me for a long while, then suddenly let out a gentle chuckle. "Very well. After all... we should fight side by side anyway." She released the hand that was preventing me from returning to the battlefield, then confidently turned so that her back was facing me.
Was she so willing to rely on me? Golden swallows flew from her sleeves, rushing at the enemy on the verge of fleeing; but my golden amber threads hemmed them in first.
...Fantastic, Ms. Orange Blossom. My Mistress... really is nothing like you.
V. Golden Thread Honey Date
The Light Kingdom is a nation with four distinct seasons. Every year in winter, a thick layer of snow weaves a New Year's garment for Reverie Valley, and when spring comes around again, the warm golden sun will thaw the frozen streams, and the swallows will come home to roost from their southern migration.
"Ms. Silver Needle, there's never been a better day than today. Put aside those humdrum cares and sit and enjoy a nice warm pot of wine with me, maybe read some poetry. Wouldn't that be swell~?" Golden Thread Honey Date lay across Junshan Silver Needle Tea's knee and pouted while her big, shining, beautiful eyes brimmed with laughter. Yellow Pea Cake grunted upon hearing this and grabbed Junshan Silver Needle Tea by the arm as she muttered:
"Ms. Junshan said she was going to play with me, so you just butt out!" "Nonsense. Ms. Junshan wouldn't play with an idiot like you!" "Oh, you! You're the idiot!"
Junshan Silver Needle Tea was pulled back and forth by the young ladies, not knowing whether to laugh or cry as she patted the two soft, fluffy heads under her palms. "Honey Date, Yellow Pea Cake... Don't start trouble, you two. Oh? Valley Mistress, you're here."
Golden Thread Honey Date froze with a start, then scrambled upright and patted smooth her ruffled clothes. But when she turned her head, there was no Bird's Nest Soup to be seen. Seeing this reaction, Yellow Pea Cake guffawed with a snide laugh. "Hahahahaha, dumb Honey Date. You fall for everything!" "Wh-what do you mean? I didn't fall for it! ..." "Yellow Pea Cake, I'm over here."
As Bird's Nest Soup's voice spoke up from behind her, Yellow Pea Cake wiped the smile off her face. She cupped a hand over her mouth and blinked her eyes, pretending like nothing at all was wrong as she turned around and started counting ants on the ground.
"...Pbff." Bird's Nest Soup laughed with a slight blush, then waved a hand at Golden Thread Honey Date, gesturing for her to follow her.
"Another winter has passed." Bird's Nest Soup spoke softly with her somewhat cryptic opening remark. Golden Thread Honey Date nodded with a smile, smoothly continuing the conversation:
"That's right. The stream has thawed, and the swallows have come home to roost." "...Yes. A swallow returned from the South has also informed me that it saw that person you once asked me about."
Golden Thread Honey Date halted her step and asked hesitantly: "...Ms. Orange Blossom?" Bird's Nest Soup nodded. She cast a quick, observant glance at Golden Thread Honey Date's expression, but there was an obvious worry in her eyes. "Honey Date, that's all... a thing of the past."
Golden Thread Honey Date, noticing the strange vibe coming from the Mistress, scratched at her cheek and felt a rare feeling of awkwardness. "...Don't worry, Mistress~" "Yes..." They walked shoulder to shoulder for some time, neither saying a word, until Bird's Nest Soup suddenly came to a halt and put her icy palm soothingly on the back of Golden Thread Honey Date's hand.
"Fear not, Honey Date. No matter what happened... we will always be with you to face it."
Golden Thread Honey Date was a bit taken aback. She found it almost laughable how precious Bird's Nest Soup's words were, but a warmth also surged through her heart upon hearing them. "Mistress, what are you being so sincere for. I knew that all along..."
The stream sang a merry song as it raced toward distant lands, and a swallow perched among the branches with their barely-sprouting green buds, cocking its head and looking at the pair under the tree.
Golden Thread Honey Date let out a carefree laugh. "—Because friends ought to have such sincere trust between them!"
