The martini is known as "the masterpiece of cocktails", the king of cocktails. It is a mixed alcoholic beverage of refined aesthetic and restrained sweetness. As a pre-dinner cocktail, it promotes appetite and aids in digestion. The martini was invented roughly 150 years ago in Italy and went on to be adored the world over as an aperitif low in alcohol, yet refined and noble in palate.

I. Return Home

No one would have imagined how lush and thriving this vast forest of withered trees once was. Towering trees intertwined to form a green canopy that covered the entire sky. The breeze passing through the forest played a heavenly melody with the rustling leaves, shielding the inhabitants beneath from both the scorching sun and torrential rain. As I placed my hand against the tree trunk, I could no longer feel the familiar, comforting flow of energy.

We had no mother, so the Mother Tree was our first protector. Though my birth was unlike that of most of my kin, they still welcomed me with joy and acknowledged me as one of their own. In an era of chaos, the Supreme God, disillusioned with the world, cast down divine punishment.

From that day forward, my kin lost the elemental magic they once took pride in. My existence was their hope. I was the only one born in the long years following the divine punishment who could still wield our lost power. And only my power could defeat the monsters that ravaged the lands beyond our forest.

Unlike me, my kin lost all means of regaining strength after the divine punishment. They no longer possessed eternal life, nor could they wield the powerful magic of the past. The little energy they had left could only sustain their most basic needs. My existence rekindled their hope. But in the end, I still failed to save them.

Beneath the Mother Tree, a stone tablet bore lines of elegant, floral script—our language—engraving the names they had once carried with pride. As their remaining energy slowly depleted, my kin left this world one by one. The elder of our tribe placed upon me the long-abandoned laurel crown.

I became the king. A useless king who could do nothing but slay monsters, forced to watch helplessly as his people faded into death. I poured my energy into the seemingly lifeless Mother Tree. Its withered branches let out faint, brittle sounds in the wind, as if responding to my touch.

"Martini! Look!"

The unusually quiet Tequila suddenly exclaimed in surprise. His eyes widened as he pointed toward one of the Mother Tree’s branches. On that barren twig, a tiny green bud had begun to emerge. Around us, the other trees seemed to share the same astonishment, their branches swaying in murmuring whispers.

"This has never happened before when you infused your energy! Could it be…"

"They're still waiting for me."

"I haven't tried hard enough."

II. Encounter

When the last of my kin departed, their strength completely depleted, I planted the glowing bud around the Mother Tree. Then, I took up my bow and left the secluded forest. As their king, I would fulfill their wish. There were still scattered remnants of our kind in this world.

There had to be a way.

There had to be a way to protect them.

It wasn’t until I left the forest that I saw, for the first time, the towns and animals I had only read about in books… and humans. This unfamiliar world seemed filled with hostility toward me. My appearance was different from theirs. My clothing stood out. Even the words I read were entirely foreign. And then… there was the strange way they spoke.

The only familiar thing was the terrifying monsters—the same ones that had lurked at the edges of my forest. Humans were fragile, far more so than my kin. When my people faced great danger, they could at least draw on the energy within them for protection. Though doing so shortened their lifespans, it was still better than these humans, who had no way to resist the monsters at all.

I drew my bow and shot down a creature that was about to attack a human child.

"Watch out! Get down!"

A hurried voice called out behind me, and instinctively, I looked up—just as the monster’s tentacle brushed past my scalp. The newcomer rushed forward, using a strange weapon to swiftly take down the creature. Once he was done, he let out a sigh of relief before turning to me, raising a hand, and knocking his knuckle hard against my forehead.

"I told you to get down! Why did you look up?!"

His tone was a mix of frustration and exasperation, but I struggled to understand his words.

"Why are you tilting your head? Do you not understand me? That was dangerous just now!"

"…I… monster… fight…"

"…Huh? You really don’t understand what I’m saying?"

Looking surprised, he leaned in closer, taking off his hat and the scarf that covered the lower half of his face. Then, with curiosity, he circled around me twice. Scratching the back of his head, he gestured with his hands.

"You… have… place… to sleep?"

I understood his gestures and shook my head. Since leaving the forest, this was the first human city I had encountered. Before this, I had mostly camped outdoors. Fortunately, the weather wasn’t too hot, and the streams here were clear enough to bathe in.

Seeing me shake my head, he grabbed my hand without hesitation and pulled me toward the town. We stopped in front of a building with a sign depicting a fork and knife. He pushed open the door, dragging me inside.

"Boss! The usual! And get one for this guy too!"

"Oh! Tequila, you’re back! Got it—two medium-rare steaks and some house fruit wine!"

"Ah, right—can you drink?"

He turned to look at me, then suddenly smacked his own forehead.

"Tch, how did I forget you don’t understand…"

He took the fruit wine the owner had brought over and held it out to me, watching intently.

"Okay?"

I sniffed the drink, catching the faint aroma of fruit, then nodded in understanding.

III. Tequila

This completely unfamiliar world had its own language system. Their language seemed to have evolved from some ancient tongues, retaining certain words that felt somewhat familiar to me. With the young man in front of me waving his hands and gesturing animatedly, we managed to communicate—albeit with some difficulty.

"Te—qui—la—"

He pronounced each syllable slowly, emphasizing the word that the shopkeeper had mentioned earlier. Then, he pointed at himself.

"Te... qui..."

"La—My name is Tequila."

Seeing his smile, I couldn't help but relax a little.

At first, this unfamiliar world had left me feeling lost and overwhelmed. But I had to admit—Tequila’s unexpected appearance made things much easier for me. He was an incredibly enthusiastic person. Initially, his energy put me on guard, but it didn’t take long to confirm that he truly meant no harm. What shocked me the most, however, was that—just like me—he could use spiritual power.

"Your kind? No, no, no, I’m a Food Soul."

"Food... Soul?"

"Yeah! Food—Soul—"

He took me to a place that looked somewhat like a temple, where we were greeted by a being with wings. Though the winged figure merely stood before us without speaking, Tequila seemed a bit nervous upon seeing him.

"Who is he?"

"He has the power to defeat Fallen Angels, but he doesn’t seem to understand our language. I was worried he’d get attacked if left alone, so I brought him back."

"...Hello."

"Hm. I’ll take care of him."

In this strange world, I couldn’t possibly find and save my people alone. So, no matter how uneasy I felt, I needed help from others. At the very least... I had to learn their language and writing.

"Martini~ Repeat after me~ Sweet—er—"

The place where Tequila had brought me housed many "Food Souls," all possessing powers similar to mine. It was all a bit overwhelming, but I had an even bigger problem to deal with. Ever since I arrived, he had arranged for several people to teach me their common language. And to speed up the process, that heartless man even assigned me homework.

"Martini! Focus! I’ll get mad!"

Candy Cane, hugging a book, planted her hands on her hips and tapped the blackboard with her cane. If the girls from my clan saw her adorable pout, they’d probably throw themselves at her for a tight hug—but at the moment, I had no time to appreciate it. Candy Cane was Croissant’s most dedicated supporter. Whenever Croissant was too busy, she took over the duty of supervising my studies. Thanks to them, I was soon able to understand their conversations.

Returning from a mission, Tequila leaned against the classroom window, stifling his laughter as he waved a bottle of liquor in my direction.

"Candy Cane, I’ll finish Croissant’s homework tonight!"

"Hey—class isn’t over yet—Martini!!"

IV. The Holy See

Tequila has excellent taste in alcohol.

The crisp sound of glass bottles clinking together rang in my ears. With my elbow resting behind me, I tilted my head back and gazed up at the sky, now unobstructed by leaves. The same brilliant night sky stretched above, with clouds drifting like tufts of cotton. The bright moon, veiled behind them, flickered in and out of sight.

Just as I was about to take another sip, the bottle in my hand was snatched away. Croissant, usually so stern, sat down beside us. He gazed at the sky, as if searching for someone beyond the moon. Tequila suddenly straightened up, his previous carefree manner stiffening. He awkwardly rubbed the tip of his nose.

"I—I just brought him here for a drink! I swear, I'll personally make sure he finishes those study materials later!"

"That’s not why I came."

Croissant took a swig from the bottle. Gone was his usual cold demeanor—he looked relaxed, at ease. Maybe it was just my imagination, but I could’ve sworn his lips curled into a faint smile. It suited him far more than his usual stony expression.

"Martini, do you have any plans from here on?"

I’d never seen Croissant like this before. As he gazed up at the moon, faint dark circles marked his eyes. Tequila once mentioned that in this vast Holy See, Croissant was the one handling almost everything. This was the first time since my arrival that I’d seen him show any sign of exhaustion.

"I need to find my people. Even though I don’t have any leads yet."

I wasn’t that familiar with everyone in the Holy See yet, but their kindness and the help they’d given me these past days were enough for me to see them as friends.

"Then why not join us for now? The Holy See’s influence is expanding, and our intelligence network is far better than what you could gather alone."

"But—"

"Just think of it as doing me a favor, how about that?"

Croissant turned to look at me. The weariness on his face caught both Tequila and me off guard.

"The Holy See is growing larger, but human desires don’t fade just because they step inside these halls. Some people can no longer be trusted, so I brought you two in."

He lifted his head toward the moon, now entirely hidden behind clouds. The melancholy and exhaustion in his eyes left me and Tequila at a loss for words.

"The darkness lurking within the Holy See is becoming increasingly reckless. But for the sake of stability, I can’t make a move without proof."

The loneliness in his voice reminded me of the emptiness I felt when I first left the forest—that deep sense of isolation, as if I simply didn’t belong in this world.

Did Croissant feel the same way?

He must feel even more helpless than I did.

"Why… do you trust me?"

"What if I said it was just a gut feeling?"

"……"

A faint smile flickered in Croissant’s eyes. When he saw the subtle twitch of my expression, he actually chuckled.

"Heh, well, it’s also because of Tequila. He told me you’re someone worth trusting."

"That’s it?"

"Tequila is someone I trust. And you’re someone he trusts. That’s more than enough."

Croissant rolled his neck and stood up, stretching his body with a long yawn.

"I’ll take that as a yes. My break is over. Make sure you finish those materials properly."

In an instant, he returned to his usual aloof demeanor, as if the smile from moments ago had been nothing more than an illusion. He brushed the grass off his coat, then turned and left the clearing without waiting for my response. I glanced at Tequila. Sensing my gaze, he stuck out his tongue playfully before throwing an arm around my shoulder.

"Well… at least if you stay here, you won’t be alone. Stay, alright? I’ll help you!"

V. Martini

Tequila and the others all knew that Martini was different from them. When they first met him, he couldn’t even speak the common language of Tierra. The intricate, rolling syllables he spoke didn’t belong to any known language on this continent. Though he made every effort to adapt to this world, his words and actions still carried an unmistakable sense of unease, as if he didn’t quite belong.

At first, the only time he truly relaxed was when he drank with Tequila. Even after officially joining the Holy See, this feeling didn’t change much. The real turning point came one day when he returned from a mission.

Inside the archive room, Candy Cane and Easter Egg were sprawled across the long table, dark circles under their eyes, buried in a mountain of documents.

"Ah! Martini, you’re back! Look! We found it!"

Easter Egg’s eyes were ringed with exhaustion, making it clear he hadn’t had a proper rest in a long time. Despite this, his face lit up with excitement as he tugged on Martini’s sleeve, eager for praise. He pushed aside the books covering the table and spread out a massive map. Red crosses densely covered the surface, but a few spots were marked with small circles.

"What is this…?"

"Croissant said you were searching for your kin. Since Candy Cane and I are usually in the Holy See, we decided to dig through records for clues. Fish and Chips gathered intel as well. After cross-referencing the information and analysing environmental and population data, we’ve pinpointed the locations most likely to be hiding your people!"

Easter Egg became more and more animated as he spoke, completely engrossed in explaining his findings. He didn’t even notice Martini’s expression. Martini lowered his head, his slender fingers tracing the enormous map. Around each red cross, there were notes written in different handwriting.

—Too many Fallen Angels in this area, unsuitable for survival. The rumours were false.

—The rumours about this place were fabricated, only meant to attract attention. Further investigation has confirmed this.

"Ah! We—we weren’t trying to hide these things from you… It’s just… just…"

—Just that there were too many rumours about elves. I couldn’t possibly investigate them all alone.

Martini looked at Easter Egg, who suddenly seemed nervous, and silently completed his unfinished sentence in his heart.

"…Thank you."

Realizing that Martini hadn’t misunderstood their intentions, Easter Egg finally breathed a sigh of relief. He solemnly rolled up the map and stuffed it into Martini’s hands.

"You should check out the locations marked with circles! This way, you won’t have to wander aimlessly anymore! We’ll keep looking too!"

Easter Egg beamed brightly, while Candy Cane had already fallen asleep, face down on the table. Martini ran his fingers over the map in his hands. When he looked up again, his face carried a smile Easter Egg had never seen before. The warmth in his eyes erased the last trace of unease in Easter Egg’s heart. With a grin, he reached out and took Martini’s bow.

"Go get some rest! I’ll fix up your weapon for you!"

Martini found himself ushered out of the archive room. He chuckled helplessly, watching as Easter Egg busied himself once more. Then, turning back, he saw Croissant waiting just outside.

"This was your idea?"

"Once everyone heard about your search, they started working on it themselves."

Martini caught the faint smile at the corner of Croissant’s lips and, unable to resist, lightly punched his shoulder.

"When I find my people… I’ll still call this place home."

"…Of course you will."
