For a bright tomorrow, so what if I have to put up with darkness today.

Bio[]

A Food Soul summoned by the Priest of the Cicada Wing Shrine in Sakurajima who was in charge of caring for the Sorceress and was extremely devoted to her. The humans killed the Sorceress to overthrow the rule of the gods, and Minazuki in turn killed those royal family members, after which he took up a life wandering in exile. As long as one doesn't get in his way, he is like an inexperienced young man who is kind and gentle to all. However, in order to exact revenge upon those humans that betrayed the Sorceress, he is ready to accept any punishment.

Food Introduction[]

On the last day of the sixth month (6/30 on the lunar calendar), some regions in Japan hold a ceremony called the "Purification Ritual of Summer's Passing" (Nagoshi no Harae[1]) in order to cleanse away sins and mistakes committed over the past half-year that would otherwise stain the soul and attract misfortune; and minazuki is a food found in the Kyoto region during this period. Minazuki is made from red (adzuki) beans and a cake called uiro mochi. It has a soft, chewy texture and a sweet, but not cloying, flavor.

Backgrounds[]

I. Humans

Humans truly are interesting creatures.
Whether it's the adult humans or those still young ones.

Compared to me, they all possess the briefest lifespans imaginable.
But they fill their every day, minute, and second with unique richness and color.

Sometimes of joy. Sometimes sorrow.
Their lives are fleeting, yet amazing.

So, compared to such grand work as "attending to the Sorceress", I actually prefer to go down into the villages below the mountain and spend time with average, ordinary people.

"Mr. Minazuki! To the left! The left!"
"The right!"
"Hahahaha, they're both lying to you! It's straight ahead, obviously!"

In the darkness, I waved around a wooden sword as childish voices full of joy sounded in my ears.
Following the directions of one of them, I stepped forward. Soon, the tip of my foot touched something heavy.

I took a hefty swing with the wooden sword in my hands.

*Clank—*

The feeling from the sword was not the cleaving sensation of cutting through a crisp fruit that I was imagining, but a full-body numbness from the recoil.

"Hahahahaha! Mr. Minazuki, you dummy! We tricked you!"

I took off my eye mask and saw that the children were holding the watermelon that was supposed to be in front of me, and what they replaced it with was a boulder that a wooden sword would never be able to slice.

"You little devils. I can't believe you would trick me like that!"

With smiling eyes, I scanned those little scamps now giddy with pride—little scamps that clearly had no premonition of their impending "danger".

"Now! Show them what we're made of!"

Little paper men flew from my fingertips as the kids shrieked. The paper men clung to their bodies and tickled them for all they were worth.

"Hahahahaha—Mr. Minazuki, I'm sorry—Hahahahaha—"
"Aaagh, my tummy hurts from laughing—Hahahahahaha—"
"Mr. Minazuki, we'll never prank you ever again, hahahahaha—"

With arms folded over my chest, I looked out at these kids who finally seemed to learn who was boss. Seeing them crying laughing and begging for mercy, I nodded contentedly and withdrew my hardworking little paper men.

"That just about does it."
"Hey! Now's our chance!"

These little devils who just didn't know when to admit defeat pounced on me while I was putting away my paper men, attacking all of my "weak spots".

"Hahahaha—Scoundrels! This is a sneak attack! Hahahaha, stop! Stop!"

Our frolicking on the beach was gradually brought to an end by the orange-red setting sun and the waves lapping up at our feet. As I waved goodbye to the last child leaving with his older brother, I stretched my back.

Well, time for me to head back too.

II. Sorceress

When I got back to the shrine, a silver moon like a jade disc was hanging in the air, and drifting clouds left occasional shadows on the ground.
I hid myself in those shallow shadows, praying that this crude concealment would allow me to avoid the patrols of those old fuddy-duddies.

"You are... the Venerable Priest's Food Soul, Minazuki, aren't you? Where did you run off to?"
"Uh—"

A gentle voice from behind me brought my feet to a standstill. I stiffly turned my neck and saw two figures behind me in the tatami room.

"I..."

Before I could think of a suitable response, one of them had walked up to me and lifted a hand.

—Ack... I'm going to be taught a lesson.
With that thought, I unconsciously flinched; but the next moment, the hand that fell on my cheek couldn't have been more tender.

The hand merely brushed away a smudge of grime from my face.

When I opened my eyes, I was met with the sight of a pair of moon-like eyes reflecting the real moon's radiance, so dazzling I couldn't take my eyes off them.

"It looks like you had a lot of fun."
"Uh, um..."

They were the "Great Sorceresses" I was supposed to look after, although in this case, boy and girl twins.
Even though, since I'd been summoned, I hadn't seen them but a few times....
...and every time, I only saw them sitting upon a high dais from afar, receiving the worship and adulation of the people...

...this was the first time I'd ever seen them so close.
They weren't reproachful like I'd imagined, nor alienating and overbearing. They gently and kindly wiped away a bit of dirt I'd picked up while playing, and then looked at me hesitantly.

"If... you don't mind, could you tell us a bit... about how life is for everyone... outside the shrine?"

No one could refuse their hopeful countenances, and of course, neither could I.

"Eh? You mean that watermelon isn't a red fruit? We always thought that the red inside part we eat was just how it looked."
"Heh-heh, those kids really are funny. If we had a chance to play with them, how nice that would be."

As I looked at these two laughing behind their hands, I couldn't help but smile myself.

This job of "taking care" of these two "Great Sorceresses" wasn't at all as odious as I'd imagined.
Looks like the next time it was my turn, I wouldn't have to try to squirm out of it with some excuse.

III. Ceremony

"What? Then, is that child alright?!"
"After she was sold off by her parents, she was rescued by a kindhearted person. Now her life may be not exactly easy, but at least she is with a family that won't abandon her."
"...Sigh."

As I looked at the mournful eyes of the "Sorceresses" before me, I reached out and recalled the paper men that had been acting out this human melodrama on a paper stage.

Ever since getting to know these two, whenever I was attending on them, they would ask that white rabbit to take away the other clerics and get me to tell them of all the things I'd seen in the "mortal world".

Sometimes happy, sometimes sad.

When they heard something funny, they would cover their mouths with their long sleeves, and their eyes would curl up in smiles.
When they heard something sad, the depths of their eyes seemed tinged with rain and mist.

Even though they couldn't see it in person, they vividly imagined everything I spoke of.

They got happy for their joys and sad for their sorrows.
They didn't seem like very well-qualified "deities", but in these times of rampant Fallen Angels and war, it was enough to give one hope.

"...Would you like... to slip out and see it for yourselves?"

I once asked them thusly.

"It would cause trouble for everyone. We are bearers of an important mission. We cannot be so willful and irresponsible."

They smiled tenderly, but I could see a disappointment well-hidden in their eyes.

Time is very slow for us Food Souls.
But for humans, it's very fast.

And so these Sorceresses, being both so human and yet treated so preferentially by time, became objects of longing for all the humans on Sakurajima.
What was originally their birthdays became a ceremony in which all people looked forward to receiving a blessing.

Sitting high atop Kagura Temple and bestowing blessings upon every citizen that prayed for it was their "rightful" duty.

Meanwhile, that white rabbit and I could see the yearning they had to see these bustling ceremonies.
I described to them the rich scenes of the humans' celebrations.

Candied apples, takoyaki, fishing for goldfish, parades.

All of the people frolicking and laughing. The girls wearing their prettiest robes and the boys donning their most handsome masks. Everyone clip-clopping around in wooden geta sandals, carrying water balloons and sharing marshmallows toasted golden brown in candle flame.

There may have been Fallen Angels, and the chaos of war, and untold hardships.
But in that moment, they were happy and joyful.

And this simple happiness was an unreachable luxury for those sitting on high with the ability to "make others' wishes come true".

This was a disappointment that only I, who was so close to them, and that white rabbit could see.
It was also a "willful indulgence" that they would absolutely never display before others.

But as long as no one found out about it, making this little wish of theirs come true wasn't completely out of the question.
Was it?

"Wait! W-wait! Minazuki, where are you taking us?"
"Minazuki?! If the Master Cleric were to know, you would get a scolding!"
"It's okay. That rabbit will help stall them for us. You'll see when we get there!"
"What? Tsukimi is in on this scheme with you?!"

I pulled them along by the hand, running toward a ceremony in the distance that had fallen into stillness.

Standing at the ceremonial torii gate entrance, all the lanterns had been extinguished, but the aroma of food in the air had not yet dissipated.

"*Pant—pant—*... M-Minazuki... why have you... brought us here...?"

This little bit of exercise had these Sorceresses who had long been cooped up in the shrine breathing heavily as they looked out on the pitch black ceremonial street.

"Yes, and you made us change into these clothes."

In these ordinary robes, the "Great Sorceresses" looked like the most ordinary young man and lady at the ceremony. In their cute clothes and their dashing yaoguai mask, they looked just like normal people from top to bottom.

And so they could possess the happiness of normal people.

*Snap—*
The sound of a thumb brushing against a forefinger resonated in the air, and instantly, the entire ceremony was lit up by bright lanterns.

All of a sudden, the silent celebration street was full of shops of every kind, and countless "pedestrians" strolled all around.

Those familiar paper men were no longer confined to their little paper stage. They formed big groups, operating different shops while other little ones nimbly crowded around the various game stalls, silently yet vividly demonstrating how they were played.

I stood before the torii gate and looked back at the Sorceresses.

"My dears, although we can't allow more people to join in, today this is your own private ceremonial festival."

The ceremony came to an end, full and perfect, just like their smiles.
But, no one expected that our separation after this... would be permanent.

IV. Humanity

The day the earth sunk, the boy Sorceress twin told me with a smile that no matter how long it took or how hard it was, he and his sister would always protect this land.

That day when the world spun in reverse and the oceans flowed backward, everything seemed to plunge into despair.
It was those two who used their power to end this calamity.
It was also they who secured a lifeline for all the people in this land.

This was the only way they could find to cheat the gods and save the people:
—using their combined powers and the ability of the Heavenspear to reforge from memory that land that had been wiped out, and then hide this "land that should not exist" in Acheron, out of sight of the severe and stern gods.

The twins were forced to separate, only for their love of this land.
And that moon rabbit and I shouldered the task of caring for our respective "Sorceress".

I had thought the only thing that could take them away was the gods and time.
But...

As I ran around in a panic, I endlessly questioned myself.

Why?
Why had I told them about how wonderful these humans they guarded over were?
Why?
Why had I let them experience that delightful ceremonial festival?
Why?
Why had I let them see the humans' smiling faces?

If they had never known from the start...
If they had never experienced all that beauty...
...would everything have turned out differently?

In those bursts of fire that licked the sky, not only would there be Fallen Angels drawn in by negative emotion.
There would also be humans with eyes red from killing.

The paper men standing guard by his side were torn to pieces one after another, and I was blocked off on the outside by countless humans.

Why?
He was the Great Sorceress that protected you all for so long.
Why?
He suffered the separation from his own twin sister just for you.
Why?
He clearly had given everything for you all.

"Kill the Sorceress! Never let the people of Sakurajima be cheated by those foolish "deities" again!"
"Kill the Sorceress! Sakurajima is ours! It should be run by us normal people!"
"Kill the Sorceress! It's our land! Our labor! Not the property of these royals!"
"Kill the Sorceress! And we can have freedom and equality!"

Topple the tyranny of theocracy and bring equality to all. Don't let these ecclesiasts who know nothing but "prayer" hold the power anymore. Do not let them enjoy treatment incommensurate with the labor they put forth.
Such sound reasoning, as far as humans are concerned.

So, the most revered Great Sorceress of bygone days became the most reviled public enemy number one.

When I charged into that little tatami room where the paper men had staged their paper plays countless times, a blossom of vivid red had bloomed on the plain white mats, so brilliant that even on that dark night, it was instantly eye-catching.

The flower blooming from his chest reminded me of that day before the torii gate, and the twin brother and sister pulling awkwardly at the hems of their robes.
Their smiles then were just as captivating and entrancing.

"Aaaaah—"

A mournful wail spilled from my throat.
The cry was enough to tear my vocal cords, but I felt none of that pain.

Sorrow, pain, all feelings—they seemed to be things happening to someone else.
And I was just watching a tragedy be acted out on a paper stage.

In the play, and yet like a spectator.

I could no longer connect my thoughts and my actions. When I took his blood-soaked body into my arms, I should have felt sorrow, but my heart was unusually calm.

Even... totally void of anything.

It wasn't until I felt a touch of warmth on my cheek that my mind floating in the clouds was pulled back into my body, and I looked down at this person in my arms.

Even now, the smile on his face was as tender as ever.

"Minazuki, do not hold hatred for the humans. After all, humans are such good creatures. And you... are such a kind and gentle Minazuki..."

V. Minazuki

*Clop-clop-clop-clop—*
Wooden geta sandals tapped against the stone pavers, and a pair of stubby legs flittered off at a run toward the murky forest depths.

*Bump—*
An audience watched this girl pounce into the chest of a young man, and as the muffled sound arose, in their minds they seemed to hear a faint cracking sound.

It was such a full-on collision that the onlookers worried whether this young man would make it through this attack unscathed.

"Ooof! *Cough-cough-cough—cough-cough-cough—*"

Not unexpectedly, after the thud, the young man woke up from his dream clutching his chest from the heavy blow.

The furrows in his brow from the dream gradually subsided, and his eyes slowly regained focus, although they were seemingly not completely alert.
When he sat up, he even brushed at the corner of his eye with a fingertip, as if he was trying to feel that lingering warmth there from his dream.

"Ah, Fortune Cookie, were you trying to assassinate me?"
"Hmph! I'm not that heavy!"

The smile on Minazuki's face made the audience now breathe a sigh of relief after being worried by his expression. The playful teasing of the young man and the girl had everyone suddenly breaking into a smile. But then, the sudden call of a young man behind them made them all anxious.

Even though they'd been living together for a long time now, these denizens of Lightless Forest still couldn't get used to this temperamental leader.

"Did you have a good dream?"
"...Boss, what are you saying? Clearly, as far as I'm concerned, it was a nightmare~"

As he made his playful response, Yokan—who rarely showed any emotion in Lightless Forest—lifted his head. His stone-faced expression made Fortune Cookie, who was normally so lively and energetic, hide behind Minazuki.

"That's not what your heart says. Calm, peace, happiness. These were what you felt in your dream."

Those eyes boring straight into him seemed like empty voids, and in that moment, Minazuki could still feel a shiver as that gaze penetrated his soul. Although, especially compared to others, he didn't have any fear of this kami deity before him.

"Boss, if you always snoop into other people's minds like this, you're going to be shunned!"

Paying no mind to Minazuki's forced laughter, the young man moved his hand over his hollow chest in a preoccupied manner.

"However, after that, there was an intense longing, regret, and hatred. Your heart... was wounded."
"...If I didn't spend time with you, Boss, I wouldn't even know I'd been wounded~ Very interesting. Emotions are indeed an interesting phenomenon."

With a smile on his face, Minazuki stood up and patted away the shoeprints left by Fortune Cookie's geta sandals.

"Alright, alright. Enough rest. Time to get down to work for the Big Boss here~"
"Minazuki."
"...Yes?"

In that heart-stopping stillness, the voice sounded like it was echoing inside his own head. In the pitch dark, that sorrowless and joyless "deity" stared straight into Minazuki, who was trying to hide it all behind a mustered smile.

"All ripples will eventually be erased in time. And any present disturbance, be it of good or evil, joy or sorrow, can only bring destruction."
"..."
"So, we must smooth away everything... in order to bring true happiness. Mustn't we?"
