“ | The stars in heaven hide secrets, don't you know? | ” |
Bio[]
On the surface, he seems like a dawdling director of an observatory, always muttering incomprehensible things apropos of nothing and claiming they are divinations from the stars. But actually, as far as everyone could see, not one of these divinations ever came true, so they all started to write him off. In reality, his divinations are mostly accurate, and if some major unforeseen event happens to occur, he will think of a way to resolve it.
Food Introduction[]
Monaka is a Japanese dessert consisting of soft, sweet, rich azuki bean paste sandwiched between crispy wafers. Its original form was a type of Japanese dry pastry which used glutinous rice flour and water kneaded into a dough and rolled out into a thin crust, then cut into round shapes and baked until crispy and finally dusted on top with granulated sugar. In Volume 3, Passage 171 of the Japanese poetry anthology Shūi Wakashū, it is mentioned in a description of a palace moon-viewing that round, white pastries are brought out, and the words "monaka [very center] of the moon[1]" appear. Hence, that round dessert was given the name "monaka of the moon". In the Edo period, it gradually evolved into the form of two thin wafers with azuki bean paste in between. Because the shape of monaka mostly resembled that mentioned in Shūi Wakashū, it was also called "monaka of the moon". Afterward, it was modified into an extremely round shape and the name was gradually shortened to "monaka".

Notes
- ↑ Lit. "The moon at the top of the sky."
I. Star Rise
The sun shined through rows of bookshelves, splaying out into thin lines like harp strings.
Motes of dust floating in the light's rays were gilded by their glow as they drifted and sunk.
"Be able but modest, drifting with the times like dust in warm light."
As I recited these words that had popped up from some obscure cranny in my mind, I walked along the narrow row of shelves from the front to the back.
I had already searched through the astrology hall's entire library forward and backward.
And I'll have you know, this was Deitopia's largest—and also its only—book depository.
I pored through all the tomes here, but I never found a suitable explanation to a question that had long been plaguing me.
...
"Mr. Monaka, are your astrology techniques really effective? I don't think I've ever seen one of them come true!"
"Of course, they're effective! It's not a question of the astrology techniques. It's perhaps something unique about Deitopia that makes all of my divinations invalid."
"But Fortune Cookie's divinations are always accurate... Monaka, how about you pick up a new hobby? Last time, you said it would be a sunny day, and then I went out and got soaked. And the time before last... anyway, I'm not going to be fooled again..."
"Why would I try to fool you... My predictions are wholly in accordance with the principles of astronomy and astrology..."
"So, perhaps one of those principles is false?!"
"..."
That morning's conversation with Ramune came to mind once again, and I suddenly felt a twinge of helplessness.
If even Ramune isn't willing to believe in my astrology techniques... Where would I find a more well-suited person to practice my astrological theories on?
No... it couldn't be... all this time, my abiding interest in the stars and my faith in the objective facts illuminated by the laws of motion of celestial bodies, could it all be... based on a lie?
"No, a genius like me could never be wrong..."
This voice from the depths of my mind made me feel almost instinctually certain, as if it had been tested thousands upon thousands of times.
Rather than doubt my own abilities, I might as well doubt this land of Deitopia around me as the source of falsehoods.
I found myself thinking of that strange image often appearing in my dreams of stars hanging high in the night sky...
That's right! When I really thought about it, everything here seemed a little off—
The sky here was always covered by the aurora, whether day or night.
The constellations here seemed to appear at random, without any set path to speak of.
There was no rhyme or reason to the weather here either. No four seasons, and never any really disastrous weather phenomena.
Everything was too perfect, just like that self-styled kami Yokan had hoped—causing no suffering whatsoever.
It was like a fake world where Yokan pulled all the strings.
Then what could the truth be?
It was as if every falling flower, flowing water, or floating cloud was off. Like the wind and thunder, and the stars and moon were suffused with the inauthentic.
In this moment, I was suddenly seized with inspiration.
I had forgotten something very important, and that something was stored in the astrology hall.
And so, I came once again to the most likely place in the astrology hall to store something—the library—to try to find the clue I'd overlooked.
"...Heptastellar Divinations—read it... Heavenly Systems and Orbits—read it... Notes on Historical Phenomena—I've read this too... Eh? What's this? An anonymous notebook?"
Oh? No way!? Could this be fortune smiling on her genius?
I actually did find a fish that had slipped the net in an out-of-the-way stack of books.
As soon as the familiar handwriting appeared before me, I knew at first sight it was my own. And it was a flowing, florid hand that I would only ever write in a state of agitation. The problem was, I hadn't the slightest impression of the contents I was looking at...
"Monaka."
Just as I was about to carefully pore through what was written there, a pleasing female voice suddenly gave me a start.
"Ack—Mistress Keiko?"
Mistress Keiko and Master Amanuma were a pair of very identical-looking male-female twins and the Kami's emissaries in Deitopia. Everyone called them the Great Sorceresses.
Although I felt a bit of dread toward the Kami, I actually felt a sort of natural affinity to the Great Sorceresses.
"I knocked on the door, but you were too absorbed in your book, so you didn't notice. What is it? What are you reading?"
"Nothing. I merely found a book I hadn't read before. Uh... Is there something I can do for you?"
With a smile, I changed the subject, and Mistress Keiko did not pursue the matter further.
"The Kami has a matter he wishes to discuss with you."
And so, I got up, throwing the notebook I was holding onto a book pile, planning to read it when I got back.
After all, such artful handwriting probably couldn't be deciphered by anyone else.
And then...
On that mild and sunny afternoon...
...after I'd had my emotions and memories extracted and cleansed by the Kami, I also forgot to go back and crack open that book that had the truth written in it by my own hand.
I returned to my room and fell asleep with a light, yet exhausted heart.
I had that dream again—in the dream, the night sky was full and sparkling. The moon shone bright as the constellations vied with it for glory.
The stars had arisen, reversing course through the sky because of a disorder of day and night.
From this anomaly, the heavens toppled, black became white, and right became wrong. It was a bad omen indeed.
II. White Rainbow Across the Sun
Through these endless cycles of renewal, time seemed to lose its significance.
In a sprawling, golden dreamscape, a divine power seemed to come from every direction, coalescing into forceful, urging voices one after another.
"Wake up—You have something more important to do! Wake up..."
A long, white rainbow scattered a dazzling glow. As it passed over the sun, the perfectly spotless gold was tainted with a streak of white that spread like a crack, bringing the dreamscape crashing down.
White rainbow crossing the sun. A sign of revolution.
My eyes shot open. I felt as if I'd been plucked from a massive, swirling black hole, and my head was a dizzy mess.
The voice calling me awake was so familiar, so intimate, but for all the world I couldn't think...
...of just whose it was...
Before me was the tireless, ever-present afternoon sun.
The sunlight was thick and misty, as if it was shining through a stained-glass window of aurora light.
The sky was as alluring as ever, but I couldn't help feeling... something was missing in my heart...
I strolled aimlessly through the courtyard trying to relax myself in order to recompose my scattered thoughts.
"May the truth appear swift as falling flowers, flowing waters, or floating clouds. Like the stars and the moon. Like the wind and thunder, rain and snow."
"Who's there—Oh, Mistress Keiko? And Master Amanuma..."
"Do you remember now?"
"Remember... what? I... hang on, I seem to have heard those words before somewhere..."
Scattered images streamed past me, sending me into an even more perplexed state.
After who knows how long, a name popped into my mind—
"Sea Bream Sashimi?"
The name was like a spell. After saying it aloud, all those sealed away memories were restored to their rightful place.
"The real world is plunged into catastrophe due to missing a large number of Food Souls. Fallen Angels are ravaging the land, and the people can't hold on much longer."
"Acheron is looking none too bright either. If its people cannot be brought out of Acheron before the artifact is destroyed, they will all be buried there."
Hearing the Great Sorceresses' report, my mind raced as I recalled to memory these names of Acheron and the real world, trying to process them as quickly as possible.
I even remembered in connection everything about Deitopia.
To put it simply, the part of Sakurajima that was fixed in reality was called the real world, and the one hidden in the shadows was called Acheron.
Deitopia was merely a small world created by Yokan using the divine power of the jade magatama, a cage for the Food Souls of the real world.
But it was also the sole passageway connecting the two worlds.
The plan that Sea Bream Sashimi and I had drawn up was to use this connection and migrate the people of Acheron to Deitopia before it collapsed completely, and then return them to the real world via Deitopia.
But as the creator of Deitopia, Yokan had final say over who came in or out...
"Perhaps you may find this request disturbing, but right now, you are the only one who can do it..."
"Monaka, we beg of you, you must lead everyone back to the real world!"
Hearing the request of the Great Sorceresses, and adding to that the solemn promise I had given to Sea Bream Sashimi...
"..."
Sigh. The weight on my shoulders never felt so heavy~
But according to that heavenly sign from the start of all this, there was sure to be a chance to turn this all around.
I had awakened, and the time had come for a revolution in this so-called Deitopia!
III. Mars in Scorpio
“When Mars is in Scorpio, disasters are guaranteed. Wars will abound, and the world will mourn."
I've heard this phenomenon has occurred twice in the real world Sakurajima.
Once was before the Great Sorceress was stabbed to death. I still hadn't been summoned then.
The assassination of the Great Sorceress meant the ascendence of the crown over the gods and a loss of protection for the Yin-Yang school, which gradually died out.
My Master Attendant took the last collection of tomes—and his considerable talents—and, keeping his identity concealed, traveled to distant lands.
Of course, that's what Master Attendant himself said. In my eyes, that wiry and spry old timer was just an old scholar who looked tough and talked tough, but was soft on the inside.
I once saw with my own eyes him waking up in the middle of the night and shedding a tear in the direction that the Sorceress had fallen.
I also saw him get so flustered and red in the face that he couldn't talk when a village child went on some ill-informed rant about Yin-Yang techniques.
Shoulders that couldn't lift. Hands that couldn't carry...
His greatest accomplishment was very likely his summoning of my genius self!
"Monaka, never forget to keep gazing at the sky!"
"Don't worry, Attendant. The stars are so interesting that I'm sure I'll never get my fill."
These were the last words Master Attendant and I said to each other. It must have been a deathbed flash of inspiration on the old man's part, giving me this sort of Yin-Yang incantation spell that I couldn't help but obey.
Otherwise, how else through all these long years since have I actually done as he said and never stop staring at these starry skies...?
After the Yin-Yang school faded entirely, I responded to the changing times and built an observatory open to the public in order to better observe the paths of the stars.
Little did I expect Minazuki to find me through the observatory.
And it was during the second time the phenomenon of Mars in Scorpio occurred.
Talk about an ill-omened guest.
If you didn't know, this grinning, harmless-looking young man was summoned to this world a great many years before me.
He was once responsible for looking after the Great Sorceress, and for that reason he looked upon the royal family as traitors, and later, this grudge got extended to the whole of the human race.
"Hello, Monaka. My name is Minazuki. I hear you are the heir to the Yin-Yang school tradition and know much about the past. Perhaps we two can revitalize the Yin-Yang school~"
"That's a very interesting idea you've got, but I think that doing something because of a grudge makes the thing you're doing lose its meaning. Besides, I much prefer observing the stars, not the matters of the world."
"Oh~ You know much indeed."
"That's right. Or else you wouldn't have sought me out."
"Since you're so clear on all the details, you must also know what contemptible and selfish beings the humans are. Food Souls ought not provide further help to such an insignificant race."
"But wasn't the Great Sorceress a human? And in the future, perhaps someone—"
"Silence! How could the Great Sorceress possibly be the same... Heh-heh, although you certainly know how to keep your guard up. It appears I won't be able to convince you."
Taking the high ground, I declined to respond. As I smiled, I saw Minazuki's confident smile momentarily collapse before recovering again, like slipping on a mask.
He had come to me at first under the banner of partnership, hoping that I'd join him in taking revenge on the humans.
But I had seen his horoscope. Even as much as he scorned humans now, his future eventually held salvation at someone's hands.
That was why I had no need to debate with him. All I need do was smile and wait for that day to come.
Unfortunately, Minazuki clearly misinterpreted the meaning of my smile. He stared at me for a long while, then suddenly erupted in a hearty chuckle.
"Interesting. It appears not only are we incapable of becoming friends, but may well turn into adversaries. Mark me: I will beat you to the punch and find a way to make a breakthrough. And when I do, We'll see if you can still protect those hypocrite humans, Mr. Monaka~"
"...?"
I blinked my eyes. Mars was in Scorpio, sowing chaos across the skies.
And so it was in the world too. Even with the Food Souls' help, the humans' situation was precarious, and they'd had their fill of hardship. What more did Minazuki want from them?
"You don't understand. All I want is justice... Those people... don't deserve to exist..."
After that, Minazuki never showed up in my presence again.
And when I learned of his entire plan, I was already in Deitopia and had lost most of my memory.
—Until I was reawakened by the jade magatama.
IV. Dual Moon Complement
Deitopia, the astrology hall.
The night before, I stayed up too late going through my memories that I was unable to get up on time the next day.
When I got to the astrology hall, Nerikiri and Hanabira Mochi were both already there.
"Director, you're late."
Nerikiri's angular, clean-cut face was perfectly composed as he stared serenely, yet severely at me.
The room that I'd made a mess of before was now neat and tidy, without a speck of dust in it.
The flowers and plants adorning the room had also been arranged just-so, looking fresh, plucky, and full of life.
All of this was Nerikiri's doing. The man's self-discipline was frankly terrifying.
Ever since he joined the astrology hall, my life had been forced to become more regimented...
"Good morning, Nerikiri. It's just an occasional thing. I won't make a habit of it~"
"Unacceptable. As our teacher and leader, you must set an example. I hope you will learn a lesson from this and not let it happen again!"
"...Alright, alright. I got it..."
Having dealt with Nerikiri, I saw Hanabira Mochi trying to hide her laughter behind a door. From the look on her face, I knew she must have been imagining some strange plot in that head of hers.
"Hey, Hanabira Mochi, what nonsense is running through your head all day long!"
"I'm not here. You can't see me you can't see me you can't see me..."
As I looked at these two weirdos in my astrology hall and thought about Matcha's detective agency and Oden's Midnight Diner and all the well-behaved, cute little kids there, and also learned and refined Soka Senbei, I couldn't help but mourn my fate...
I wanted obedient, prudent, clever, cute, learned, and talented staff too!
"Ahem. Starting today, we're formally changing the name of the astrology hall into the observatory!"
"Huh—?"
"I agree. Astrology hall seems fantastical in comparison to the objective and orderly feel of observatory."
"Nerikiri, how can you agree? If we call it an observatory, it'll seem like a place for glasses-wearing, cultured men... You two... don't seem to fit that vibe too well..."
"Guys, this decision is solely up to me as the director. It was not my intention to solicit your opinions."
"...Director, is the reason you want to change the name all of a sudden because..."
"Hanabira Mochi!! Cease and desist from your outlandish imaginings immediately!"
"Director, please control your volume. Shouting is forbidden in the observatory."
...
After busying myself for a whole morning, I finally got all the signs changed from astrology hall to observatory.
And not unexpectedly, I was called in by Yokan for questioning. After all, I had an observatory back in the real world, so suddenly changing the name like this must have made him suspicious.
I did not plan to continue hiding the truth.
The situation right now was as if there were two moons in the sky, both fighting to see who was brighter.
Time was limited. I couldn't lay low and bide my time any longer.
"You know everything."
"Yes. And in a way that I won't forget again."
Yokan's sympathetic, yet emotionless face did not move a muscle.
Compared to the sphynx of a person Yokan was, Minazuki was actually quite adorable.
But without Minazuki, I don't think things would have turned out as they had.
I sat across from Yokan, feeling his emotional manipulation but doing my best to stay calm and maintain a restrained smile.
"Since you cleansed Minazuki, he's been surprisingly pure and naive. But now he won't be able to help you anymore."
"I only wanted everyone to avoid unhappiness and suffering. Minazuki is no different. He deserves to forget too."
"But we don't want to forget our pasts."
"You all are wrong, and my responsibility is to correct you."
As I looked into Yokan's unimpeachably compassionate face, I knew it would be impossible to persuade him with words alone. I shook my head with a chuckle.
"I have no interest in debating with you. I just wanted to inform you that your cleansing has no effect on me."
"But my cleansing is still effective on the others. Even if you tell them, it won't amount to anything."
"So it's a stalemate right now. You can't control me, and I can't control you. Don't worry. I don't want to do anything useless like that. I have no intention of telling others. I'm just going to quietly research ways to defeat you and prove that it's you who are in the wrong."
This one time, Yokan fell silent for a moment. Just when I thought I had misjudged and he was going to haul off and hit me...
...he actually got up and left, leaving me with these final words before he did:
"Well then, I wish you success."
V. Monaka
Deitopia, astrology hall.
Keiko took Monaka to see Yokan.
Amanuma, meanwhile, appeared after they left and picked up that anonymous notebook from the heap of books.
Monaka's undulating scrawl of penmanship met his gaze.
It was a letter he had written to his future self if he lost his memory—
"May the truth appear swift as falling flowers, flowing waters, or floating clouds. Like the stars and the moon. Like the wind and thunder, rain and snow."
"Do these words feel familiar to you? Does it remind you of anything?"
"This is an incantation of Sea Bream Sashimi, said to be able to help us keep our reason and keep from being muddled. However, I personally think it's only modestly effective."
"Oh yes, Sea Bream Sashimi, right? Remember now?"
"The fact that you found this book proves that you already have started having doubts about this so-called Deitopia. Or else you're just lucky enough, but if you deeply believe that Deitopia is just, then perhaps you won't believe in what I have written."
"Haha, what am I writing? ...Basically, it's quite simple. This Deitopia in which you reside is fake. A ploy of Yokan and Minazuki's."
"The two of them have used the jade magatama which you and Sea Bream Sashimi worked so hard to send to the real world and constructed this cage of illusions."
"However, by some inadvertent fluke, Deitopia can actually connect Acheron and the real world, a fact which you can make use of."
"Open up your crystal ball. Still remember how to summon it? Find a way to contact Sea Bream Sashimi."
"He has been waiting for you this whole time."
"That aside, I hope this book isn't discovered by Yokan. Although I suspect that fellow has not one bit of interest in reading books, so it's probably quite safe... I really don't know what he does all day. Doesn't he get bored after seeing so much of this false peace?"
"Alright, there's no more time to write more. Monaka, I am you, so I believe in you. You can do it."
"You can trust the Great Sorceresses, and Sea Bream Sashimi, and yourself. Apart from that, don't forget to keep gazing at the sky, and don't doubt the voice inside your heart."
"Good luck with everything!"
After reading all this, Amanuma calmly placed the notebook back on the very bottom of the book pile.
He raised his right hand, and a phantom of a magatama floated in the air emanating a lustrous glow.
"Perhaps..."
Amanuma clasped the magatama, making the glowing phantom merge back into his palm.
His expression slowly turned firm and unflinching.
For that "perhaps", Amanuma and Keiko had used the jade magatama, the only thing sustaining themselves, to awaken Monaka.
"What we're about to say now may be a bit troubling to you."
"Lately we've made countless deductions, and we've confirmed that Acheron truly is beyond saving. The only thing we can do is evacuate everyone."
"But it all must be agreed to by Yokan. Aside from that, it can only be opened by someone from the real world coming in from the outside."
"Unfortunately, the real world has completely forgotten all of this. Even if they accidentally happen upon the altar, it can only be opened using divine power... so it will be very difficult to get assistance from the outside world."
"My brother and I are slowly losing our mental powers. Perhaps not long from now, the only thing we'll be able to do is obey Yokan's orders."
"We know you can contact Acheron. We're sorry, but the responsibility of saving everyone might now be yours alone."
"Take this—"
"The jade magatama??"
"Keep the magatama. It can prevent you from being affected by fantasy and from forgetting."
"But you two..."
"We were always going to expend all our power and wither someday. We might as well use this last bit of strength to do the right thing."
"After all, we were the ones who created Acheron and the real world. It should be we who pay the price~"
"It's lucky enough that we were even able to be reunited here, isn't it?"
Monaka silently held up the jade magatama, at long last summoning the crystal ball that floated between his fingers, then he hid the magatama inside that crack in space-time inside the crystal ball.
"You must think of a way to save everyone."
It was clearly an imposing request, but Monaka broke into a laugh.
It was confident and assured, as if he could feel victory in the palm of his hand.
"Worry not. Our victory was written in the stars long ago!"
