"Thank you for responding to my wish, god. Please grant me a food soul that can take my place and to worship you......"
"Osechi......please help me!"
Within the unknown darkness, I could faintly hear someone summoning me.
I couldn't control myself due to the power of the warmth in the voice and began to move closer to it.
As my eyes opened, a lavishly dressed lady stood before me.
"You appeared, you really appeared! I thank you heaven and god!"
My mind was still in a complete mess. I saw her grab a bronze mirror before walking towards me on her knees. What was reflected on the mirrors was both of our faces. To my surprise, they can be considered replicates of one another save for the different expressions.
"My wish came true......I can't believe I managed to summon a food soul that looks nearly identical to me!"
"Why did you make that wish?"
Seeing her excitement, I was confused.
She gripped my hand and explained to me with a slow intonation.
It turns out, there exists a tradition in the country's imperial family. To ensure that the imperial family live a long peaceful life as well as prolonging the nation's fate, the imperial family will choose an unmarried princess to take on the role as a Miko in the emperor's shrine. She would then worship god in place of the imperial family.
Being a Miko signifies that one must not only offer everything they have to god, she is also forbidden from romancing with others.
However, the princes that was chosen this time -- my master Attendant already had her other half.
Akin to facing a dead end, my Master Attendant sought out the magic crystals her father gave. She poured all her hopes and strength to summon a food soul that could replace her.
If she were to fail, she would lose both her lover and the opportunity to be with him forever.
Perhaps it's due to the sincerity in her heart, not only did she summoned a food soul, but also one that resembled her, which was what she wanted.
Apart from her lover, no one knew about this.
As for her wish, only the three of us knew about it.
Until she changed her name and leave this palace that she called a prison, I need to learn to emulate her mannerisms and prevent my identity from being exposed once I took her place.
I wan't sure if this is the right thing to do.
I'm not a princess in the imperial family, yet I had to substitute for my master attendant to worship god. Aren't I lying to god? If god became enraged and unleashed a disaster in a fit of anger, what should we do......?
This worry tormented me and master attendant endlessly. Knewing how lucky she was, she consoled me. Perhaps, who she is consoling isn't me, but it's herself.
"God arranged our destinies. Since you're born because of my wish, it indicates that god permits you to do so. Therefore, you don't need to worry too much."
"As long you focus on learning properly, no one will find out and nothing bad will happen."
Master Attendant did not feel that our actions will bring about disaster. Although I believed her, there was still a tinge of worry in my heart that would cause me to mess up. Until today, this anxious feeling continued to grip my heart.
II. Shocking Changes
It's been half a year since I've become the Miko of the shrine. I've also gotten used to the mundane life of being in the shrine.
As a Miko with the title of a princess, I'm spared from carrying out laborious and trivial tasks most other mikos do. As for me, all I need to do is to communicate and pray to god. But, he still did not responded to my prayers.
Is it because god couldn't easily communicate with us mere mortals, or perhaps he did not want to communicate with us? Such thoughts made me uneasy.
As days pass, I felt drained after every praying sessions. Thus, I would usually locked the doors when I returned to my room so no one would bother me.
When the maid left, I tried to unload all of the nervousness that I've accumulated for days. Terrified, I laid flat behind the folding screen without a care for crumpling the expensive dress on me.
I must show awareness of my identity before speaking or doing something. Any slip-ups must not happen. Moreover, I must be careful of what I say when my mind becomes clouded or risk drawing attention.
The way they all glance at me with bewilderment, as if they are trying to check for something amiss, often let me to believe that they getting suspicious. This only serves to make me fret even more.
With my back faced down, I let out a long sigh. I stared at the darkness that is engulfing the ceiling and raised my legs, kicking madly in the air. It was almost as if I was trying to kick all my worries out of the roof.
After venting out all of the negative emotions for a short while, I suddenly remembered about the Konpeito that I've hidden. I calmly stood up and dragged along the heavy garments on me. Once I walked towards the Takumikura on my knees, I tried to find the small paper bag containing the Konpeitos.
As a Miko, the number of rules I have to abide is even more than those in the Imperial Palace. They were so strict to the extent that the food I could eat were heavily regulated. As such, I had to say goodbye to some of those delicacies.
Fortunately for me, the maid that previously served my Master Attendant now follows me. Although we aren't very close, she still give me some amazing things. For example, snacks that are hard to find in the shrine, Hanafuda played by most maids to pass time......and Wakas created by many courageous prince.
Those Wakas are replete with deep affections and they always made me feel a sense of amusement and courage.
Aren't they afraid of the punishments that would rain down on them from the heavens when they send such inappropriate things to a Miko?
After merely consuming only one Konpeito, I heard some flurried footsteps near the corridor. Something urgent must have happened to be able to send everyone in a state of worry. Outside of the Shoji, my maid called me out in distress.
This shocked me and I spilled the Konepitos within the Takumikura.
With no time to lose, I sat up and used my dress to bury all the fallen Konepitos before letting my maid in.
She entered and nervously spoke without a care for formality.
"My lady, the fallen angels are attacking. With the army out on the battlefield, The minister of left is plotting a rebellion with his private army and he's planning to imprison the emperor!"
This came as a bombshell and I began to panic.
I gripped my chest as it was strangely hard for me to breathe.
Is this the ending that I longed for a long time?
Is this heaven's punishment because I impersonated the princess to worship god?
Is this......my fault?
Within a few days, many things changed.
The king's brother-in-law, the Minister Of left, was plotting to get rid of the king in an attempt to make the young prince succeed to the throne. This would allow him to rule the land with an iron fist. However, the prince's mother could not bear to see her husband getting injured. To foil his plan, she secretly leaked the information about the rebellion to both the commander and the Minister of Right who were in charge of subduing the fallen angels. They were prepared to suppress the Minister of Left once he starts the rebellion. In the end, the politics were stable once again.
After a few days, words of the Fallen Angel retreating spread. It's said that all of this is thanks to the food souls under the general. Despite being one of them, I brought disaster instead of wielding my power to protect my people......
The information my maid possessed were limited. I wasn't aware of the gamble the military had made. From what I knew, after the general triumphantly returned, there were changes in the country yet again. The general joined forces with the Minister of Left and used the reputation of others to occupy the faraway lands from the capital.
The imperial......had lost control over authority.
As the imperial declines, the shrine began to fall into disrepair. Since no one can maintain the furniture inside the palace, would anyone even care about a shrine that requires annual funding from the imperial? The Kannushi and the maid would have to leave the shrine to either join one of the army or look elsewhere for a job to feed themselves.
But I can't leave. My identity as the Miko is granted by the emperor. As the Miko of the imperial, I must continue to pray for the sake of the country. Everyday, I would kneel in front of the shrine and beg for god's forgiveness, hoping that he won't punish the denizens of the country because of me.
As days passed, when I thought that everyone had forgotten about this shrine, a merchant came.
Because of the imperial's inability to maintain the shrine, the Kannushi opened it to the public so everyone could visit. Matsutake Dobin Mushi is the first merchant to visit the shrine. He's rather famous in Liang Zhong and is warmly welcomed by the Kannushi despite being a food soul.
Shockingly, no one expected that he would request to see me.
The Kannushi persuaded me to see him because that man not only promised to fund the shrine, he would also fund for the construction of a new Torii.
I'm not sure why he want to see me. Perhaps he want to raise his status even higher and make his business more successful after meeting with someone from the imperial?Or perhaps, he's no different from those prince who want a glorious title? Or perhaps......he came because of me?
For the sake of those who resided in the shrine, I have to reluctantly agree to this meeting.
I thought of many scenarios, but I did not expect him to tilt his head when he see me with a puzzled expression. What he said made me astonished.
"Where's the Miko? Why did she let a Food Soul to come see me?"
He......he knew about my real identity!
At this point, I felt a sense of unprecedented helplessness and worry.
IV. Satisfied Desires
"How dare you suspect my identity!"
Using a stern voice, I denied his claim while planning to make him aware of the stark contrast between our identities. It would then be hard for him to make unbridled guess. However, he did not back off and moved closer instead, trying to raise the curtains that separated us.
"You're definitely a food soul. It's impossible to hide the soul energy inside your body. How can a food soul replace the princess from the royal family to worship god? That's preposterous!"
His words were akin to an arrow that was shot into my heart. I immediately stood up and looked at him furiously. I almost loss control of my emotions and was about to hit him.
Perhaps after seeing my furious expression, he stopped being impolite. He sat further away from me and spoke in an orderly fashion.
"You don't need to be angry. I'm not interested in the truth. To me, meeting the "Miko" will suffice."
I was caught off guard by his abrupt change in attitude and was unsure of his next actions.
"I'll hide the truth only if you help me. Don't worry, this request will benefit the both of us so I'm sure the Kannushi wouldn't have anything against it."
This sentence persuaded me and I decided to hear what he has to say. If this is something that the Kannushi can agree on, I'm sure it wouldn't disadvantage the shrine. I suppressed all the worry and anger in my heart and continued our meeting.
What happen afterwards was a short one. But what he wants me to do came as a surprise, he planned to hold a Sumo competition in this shrine. The money earned can then be used to fix the shrine and to buy incenses. Every since ancient times, Sumo is a form ritual to show respect to god. However, although I've neither witnessed it before nor heard how it can help us to bring in some cash, I was intrigued by it. Coupled with that, his proposition was so appealing that I couldn't resist accepting it. After all that, he would work together with the Kannushi to plan a suitable timing for the Sumo competition. Sumo is actually a popular activity that can not only be treated as a ritual to show respect to god, but it can also be a source of entertainment for people. What made it more attractive was the shrine itself. It wasn't open to the public before so many people are curious about it. Moreover, when Matsutake Dobin Mushi was planning on ways to publicize this competition, he came up with an idea that those who spectated this competition can receive a hand fan with the hand prints of a famous sumo wrestler. Apart from that, they also stand a chance to see the Miko, who would come and spectate the competition, bless some Omamori. To the normal folks, this is definitely appealing.
It would be very exciting and my appearance would propel the excitement even higher.
Judging from the smile on Matsutake Dobin Mushi face, I guess it would benefit him. The always solemn Kannushi showed a more relaxed expression now that the obstacles the Shrine is facing have been solved.
On this joyous occasion, not only will their wish be satisfied, I could also catch a glimpse of those I admired.
When my maid ushered my master attendant to where I was, the helpless me finally have something to rely on. I hoped that she'll stay with me forever and never leave, saving me from having to face the expressionless god on my own.
Osechi's Master Attendant is a royal princess who was chosen to be the new miko. As a miko, her job is to stay in the shrine to pray for blessings for the country and the royal family. Every Miko are restrained from getting married during this period of time. With her mind and body, she has to worship god. Otherwise, risk receiving God's punishment.
Of course, no one dared to do so. If a Miko were to find a replacement to take a place, will there be any punishment belted out?
Thinking that she'll be lucky, Osechi took on the identity of a Master Attendant and now she has to uphold the responsibility that wasn't hers in the first place. Afterwards, the princess left the palace with her lover. Under a fake name, she lived in the mansion prepared by him.
At first, the princess believed that her wishes has been fulfilled and she'll live a blissful life henceforth.
Unfortunately, her lover found a new partner and the time he visited the princess whittled down. She spent most of the night living in an empty mansion all alone. She once looked forward to this blossoming relationship. But now, this became a lonely and depressing one. She could not accept it and began to suspect whether her lover's change of heart was actually god's punishment.
Thereafter, the politics in the countries began to alter. This was followed by attacks from the fallen angels and a fight for authority. When the princess tried to reserve a position in the country, her lover went to uphold the responsibility of that position on his own accord and loss his life.
Every single event began to add more stress on the princess. The once elegant garden became barren overtime and the princess's life became a living hell. She slowly became thinner.
Soon after, she blamed herself for escaping from her responsibilities and blamed Osechi even more for responding to her wish. If Osechi never appeared, her life won't have became so miserable.
News about the sumo competition and the special appearance of the Miko to cheer for the sumo wrestlers spread like wildfire thorughout Liang Zhong in just one night. When the princess caught wind of it, she made the decision to take back what she loss and revert everything back to normal.
When Osechi saw the princess, she felt gleeful to the point that she failed to notice the strange expression on the emaciated princess's face. Once the princess ask how Osechi was doing, she became mad and attacked Osechi, ripping the headwear off Osechi's head before coming to her sense after feeling some pain. Yet, Osechi did not retaliate because the princess is her Master Attendant after all.
"You! You're the reason why the Royal Family is in this state! If you never appear, I would've still remain as the Shrine Miko and god wouldn't have belt out all of these punishments!"
The princess pushed all the blame at Osechi. Because she doubt herself after hearing all of this, Osechi was unable to refute. The princess' agression resulted in Osechi believing that she was the source of all that have happened. She let the princess take down her clothes.
There was only a piece of clothing left to cover Osechi's body. The rest was on the princess. There was a smile on her face thinking that this have already fulfilled her desire.
Matsutake Dobin Mushi came and saw this scene.
He heard the entire conversation when he was at the corridor and now that he had seen everything, he decide to propose a solution. He thought about it. Since Osechi had helped him garner some fame and fortune, he'll return the favor. Making her remember this act of kindness ain't a bad choice anyways. Hence, Matsutake Dobin Mushi decided to intefere.
He had worked in the field of business for many years and is capable of persuading anyone with his silver tongue. It wasn't surprising that he was able to convince a savage princess. Since the target audience was in a state of delusion, let's make it even more convincing. He wanted her to believe that nothing would change even if she continued to worship god. Instead, the princess' decision to change her identity on her free will only indicates her lack of respect for god, thus infuriating god even more.
The princess did not want to risk incurring god's fury any further. To ensure that she'll completely change her mind, Matsutake Dobin Mushi said that he has the resources to provide a luxurious lifestyle for the princess. Thanks to Matsutake Doobin Mushi's promise, she left promptly. However, Osechi haven't get over the fact that her master attendant attacked her. She tried to gather what little energy left and thanked Matsutake Dobin Mushi because he came to her aid.
But his assistance did not stop here.
When the politics stabilized once again, the general took advantage of the power of his food souls to obtain the most amount of authority. Fallen angels soon attack this country that have experienced tumultuous events just recently. Matasutake Dobin Mushi took this opportunity to sought out the commander and persuaded him that Osechi will use the "power of god" to drive away the fallen angels.
Osechi did not know how he did it. But she more than willing to use her power to protect her people. Under the name of god, she'll grant the commander unspeakable godly powers.
Overtime, the people began to believe that the current Miko is the true Miko that upholds the will of god. Knowing that the people have faith in her, Osechi no longer doubt herself and became more confident. She believed that even if she has to face god, she'll still admit that she's a true Miko who will try her best to protect her people. As for Matasutake Dobin Mushu, the "permit" Osechi and the commander gave him allowed his business to flourish. Soon, he became the richest businessman in the entire country.
