Bio[]

He was once imprisoned by an evil magician and trained with cruel methods such as being thrown amongst a pack of wild beasts. This terrible torture brought out his latent ability, and it was all in the service of creating a tool that would just follow orders. Panna Cotta makes no distinction between good and evil, knows nothing of ordinary life, and has only lived the life of a beast.

Food Introduction[]

Panna cotta is a classic Italian dessert originating in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. Milk, cream, and sugar are combined and brought to a simmer, then cooled until it thickens. The creamy, silky texture of panna cotta is a sure-fire winner. All it takes is one bite, and this unique texture between jelly and mousse will have anyone coming back for more.

I. Imprisoned Beast

A faint light shines down from the square window above me. Unlike the warm golden color of the day, it is pale. I lay down on the old floor, permeated by a rotten smell, looking out the window at what they call the “moon”, its existence still a mystery to me.

Was it also created by magic? Just like the shackles binding my hands…

But only silence surrounds me, and no one answers my question. Besides me, there are merely the long-tailed little creatures that often come to sniff and gnaw at my fingertips. Even so, I don’t feel like moving my fingers away, or rather—

I must maintain my current stance until “Master” issues a new command.

Click

The iron lock hanging on the narrow door opens with a loud sound, the squeaking little ones escaping to the cracks in the walls. A candlestick is extended inside and I recognize the familiar robes and pointed hat, like a ghost hiding in the dim candlelight.

“Food Soul, it’s training time.” The cold voice interrupts my thoughts, his face hidden under the wide brim of his hat. Neither moonlight nor candlelight could illuminate the features in its shadow.

“Yes, Master.”

I glance at the square window behind me, and the pale moon seems to briefly stir something in my heart. However, before I mechanically follow my master out of the iron door, the strange feeling has already been forgotten.

The “Colosseum”. The sickling stench of skin and fur envelops me as the fierce beast impatiently pounds the iron cage, causing the rusty bars to bend precariously.

Without uttering a word, Master draws out a walnut wand from his sleeve and points it towards my hands. A faint blue flame leaps lightly from the heavy chains, and just as silently, they fall from my wrists.

The moment the shackles hit the ground, Master takes a step back out of habit, his voice becoming even darker.

“I’ll give you a quarter of an hour.”

“Yes, Master.”

The dome of the arena is pitch black like the magician’s robes with a faint phosphorescent glow, probably from the accumulated souls of the dead. The magic mechanical bird in the golden cage chirps three times, but the sound is immediately drowned out by the rings of the iron cage rattling.

Thick and pungent sultry air, murky yellow dust, icky liquid, ragged flesh and blood.

This gory mist obscures my vision, but the dagger in my hand continues to tear and pierce relentlessly. I don’t understand the meaning of any of this, I only know these are Master’s orders.

I also know that the sounds and smells around me, and the scratches on my arms, make me restless. I just want it to be over already.

Chirp chirp.

When the timely chirping of the magic bird sounds again, the source of the noises has already been silenced.

“Huhu… Seems like this is already too easy for you.” A cold laughter rolls out of Master’s throat, like a beast grinding its teeth, seeking blood. “Put back your handcuffs.”

“Yes, Master.”

After reattaching the cold chains around my wrists, I feel some of my power slowly dissipating from my body. Automatically lowering my head, I silently wait for instructions from my Master to leave.

However, the bird, which had gone quiet, suddenly chirps three times again.

“It’s not over yet. Relying solely on spiritual power… Is not enough. At the end of the day, you are a Food Soul.”

The lofty master raises his walnut wand, his black robes being swept by the night breeze, and produces a huge and strange shadow.

I can’t help but feel surprised by the dangerous breathing and low growls echoing behind me. But before I have the chance to grab the dagger again, I’ve already been knocked to the ground with immense force, and a pungent liquid overflows from my mouth.

Sharp claws stomp on my chest and the sound of my bones breaking is loud and crisp, but it takes a few seconds for the pain to kick in. Bathed in an opaque crimson color, I’m unexpectedly reminded of the pale moon.

I don’t understand the meaning of its existence, just like I don’t understand the meaning of my own existence. Hiding in the darkness of the night, yet rising and setting day after day. Is it also obeying some sort of “command” it was given…?

“Food Soul… You shall obey my orders and help me retrieve the Book of the Nether.” The cursed whisper echoes in my ears again, that was the command I heard when I first opened my eyes in this world. The magician who claimed to be my master branded a magical seal on my chest, put chains on me and declared me his tool and slave.

The excruciating pain of being teared up finally strikes me, sharp fangs deeply rooted in my shoulder temporarily waking me up from my dazed musings.

“Stand up, you useless Food Soul! I’ll give you five more minutes to finish it off!” The man on the high platform waves his wand in frustration, roaring angrily as he gives me orders.

My restrained right hand stiffly reaches for the handle of the dagger and like memory my muscles finally come back to life, piercing the blade into the beast’s throat.

Obeying the commands of my master is the only thing I must bear in mind.

II. Theft

Under the pitch-black night stands a towering castle covered by some unknown foliage. Since I was summoned, this is the very first time I’m setting foot alone outside the narrow attic and the dingy arena I’m familiar with.

With the help of those thin yet strong vines, I climb up to the round window and shatter the glass with the handle of my dagger, successfully breaking into the second-floor corridor of the castle. The carpet and murals in front of me look exactly the same as those shown in Master’s crystal ball. The red wooden door at the end of the hall also emits a faint glow like a halo.

—Behind that door is the Book of the Nether Master desperately wishes for.

The thick carpet muffles the sound of my footsteps, but when I quietly approach the wooden door, my outstretched hand hesitates for a moment.

There are no beasts, no monsters, no enemies in sight. Everything seems to be going excessively smoothly.

However, my wavering lasts nothing more than a second, as I tightly grasp the handle all the same.

Click

As the lock opens, a faint blue flame rises from underneath my feet and promptly wraps around my body like a vine.

“Hah, it seems like Iberian’s prediction was right. There really was a thief visiting today.” A man slowly walks out of the shadows in the room and looks at me whimsically, but soon raises an eyebrow in surprise. “A child? I see, you’re a Food Soul…”

The soft blue vines slither around my wrists, and although they don’t make me lose strength like the shackles, they’re more resilient, tight, and harder to get rid of.

“Stop struggling, this is a magical trap. The more you try to escape, the tighter it’ll bind you.”

“Magical… Are you a magician too?”

“Oh, I’m no magician. Now tell me, kiddo, why are you trying to steal the Book of the Nether? Who sent you here?” The man frowns somewhat unhappily, folds his arms in his chest, and looks down at me condescendingly.

“My master ordered me… I must retrieve the Book of the Nether.” I try to pull up my body, but the blue flames under my feet wrap around me faster, like the roots of a plant, firmly pinning me to the floor. “They were Master’s orders… Master’s… ……”

The man’s eyebrows knit together and he stares at me with a strange expression for a long time. As I keep struggling the blue vines tighten around me, sealing my mouth so I can no longer make a sound. Through the gaps in the vines, I can vaguely see him taking out a crystal ball from his sleeve.

“Hey, Iberian. I caught the guy but he seems to have some sort of mind disturbance.” The man knocks on the crystal ball and a faint light shimmers on the spherical surface.

“…Where are they?”

“On the ground, gift-wrapped by your trap like this.” The man leans toward me with the crystal ball in hand, another figure seems to be moving inside.

“……”

After a brief silence, an incantation is whispered from above, and the interwoven blue vines covering my eyes slowly retract obediently. Is the person in the crystal ball a magician…?

“…How odd. Bresse, unbutton his shirt, show me his chest.”

“Hey, do you take me for a pervert?!”

“…I just want to see what’s with that strange aura around him.”

“……”

Without much of a choice, the man looms over me rather helplessly, not forgetting to warn me before in a half-threatening tone.

“You better stay quiet, kiddo. Otherwise, I can’t promise I won’t accidentally hurt you.”

However, before his fingers can even touch me, I start wriggling vigorously in resistance.

“Hey—I told you to stay quiet!! Damn it, I can’t even find the buttons on these tethered clothes!”

Rip

Accompanied by the irritated scolding, the fabric on my chest is torn in half, and the vines tie me up more firmly, making it impossible for me to move any further.

“……”

“This seal…? There’s no mistake, this is Locksy’s magical aura…”

“Locksy… Aleister’s last head apprentice?! The guy who disappeared after that magic test…?”

“Yes… After he was injured by you, he applied for a leave of absence.”

“Wait a sec… Hey, kiddo, wake up! Iberian, is this magic trap of yours supposed to kill him?”

“I might… Have wasted too much spiritual power trying to fight this trap… And I’m also… Injured all over…”

The conversation between the two of them gets increasingly distant and my limbs gradually become limp as I sink into the tightly woven blue vines.

III. Freedom

“Hey kiddo, you finally woke up.”

Above, a warm yellow chandelier gently sways, surrounding the impatient face in front of me in a vague halo. The vines that wrapped around my body have disappeared, but my hands and feet still won’t obey me properly.

“Take it easy, your spiritual power hasn’t been restored yet. Why don’t you preserve your strength so you can confront your master later?” He has a cool and composed face, but his gaze isn’t as sharp as when we first met.

Knock, knock

A slightly hesitant knock echoes through the spacious room, and he lets out a soft snort before sitting down again on the ornate chair.

“Long time no see, Bresse Chicken Soup…” The gentleman wrapped in robes doesn’t even spare me a glance, just takes off his wide pointed hat and stares straight at the man sitting in the upper seat. Half of his face is covered by old and hideous scars.

“Locksy, I didn’t expect you to summon a Food Soul… Hmph, and only to have them help you steal the Book of the Nether? Are you trying to follow Aleister’s footsteps, by any chance?”

“The Book of the Nether? How could that be? It’s clear that this Food Soul tried to steal it by himself to betray me.”

“Hah, always so full of bullshit. What use would he have for the book to steal it?”

“The forbidden spells in the Book of the Nether not only contain hidden knowledge… They can also help a Food Soul break free from the constraints of their contract.”

“……?”

“So, in order to kill me, he had to steal the book.”

That familiar and cold laughter seems to roll out from deep into Master’s throat, and he turns his head to look at me pointedly, reaffirming his words emphatically.

“Isn’t that right, Panna Cotta? Killing me was your goal all along, wasn’t it?”

“My… Goal…”

To kill my master. That was my goal. So that’s how it is.

That short command pierces through the fog clouding my mind, and my complex thoughts become unified and mechanical again. There is no need to think deeply, my muscle memory has already swiveled the dagger to the right angle and aimed it at the pale human’s neck.

However, the dagger soon falls out of my hand as I’m pinned to the ground by an overwhelming strength.

“Hey, kiddo, get a hold of yourself… You still have your contract, you can’t kill him.” The man holds me back with his elbow tightly locked around my neck but softly loosens it a few seconds later.

“Hahaha… See, didn’t I tell you? This despicable spirit left without permission and tried to steal the Book of the Nether just so he could kill me.”

“Shut your trap… Guh! Hey, kiddo—Stop kicking around!! Hey—!!!”

Those crimson memories once again flood my vision, the strong and pungent hot air, the sticky fluids, the claws piercing my skin, the sound of my bones splitting. Even though I hate all of it, I must obey every order.

I dig my teeth ferociously into the arm restraining me, and the man’s furious voice explodes above my head, but he doesn’t let go of his grip. Then, a strange chanting echoes from behind me, and I’m thrown to the side without any previous warning.

Before I give in to the darkness, I can see the laughing magician, his robes floating in the night breeze and the grotesque scars on his face twisting like worms. A blinding blue light bursts out from the walnut wand, and like lighting, pierces straight into the man.

The sunshine is warm on my skin. I feel trapped in its tenderness, reluctant to open my eyes.

Not far away, two familiar voices come and go intermittently.

“…That stupid bastard! How dare he attempt to sneak attack me with magic? Didn’t I give him a good ass-whooping last time?!”

“…I wasn’t expecting him to be the person aiming for the Book of the Nether. It looks like we must make haste and perform the magical ceremony to seal the book already.”

“I don’t know what kind of magical curse that kid was under, but he suddenly went crazy and tried to kill the scumbag… Although he can’t injure his own master attendant, if those old fogeys who hate us Food Souls were to find out about it, they could use the opportunity to cause a commotion.”

“Really, that kid… You actually handled the situation quite nicely this time, Bresse.”

“Hmph, guess I did okay… By the way, some strange shackles were also found at Locksy’s house. They seem to have been built using some sort of unusual material, which can drain a Food Soul’s spiritual power.”

“It looks like there are still a lot of things behind this occurrence that need to be investigated. Let’s leave this matter to the Magic Control Bureau.”

“Yeah, it’s out of our hands now. I’m going to check on the kiddo.”

The sound of heavy boots gets closer and the curtains in front of me are lifted.

“You’re awake?”

“……”

“You have a few injuries, but it shouldn’t be a big deal for a Food Soul. You’ll be fully recovered in a few days tops.”

“Hm…”

“Oh, also, since your master was plotting to steal the Book of the Nether, he needs to be investigated and then imprisoned. In the future, you may never see him again.”

“…Then, are you… My new master?”

“Master?! What do you mean, ‘master’—Listen, kiddo, you’re free now.”

Free…? The real bird outside the window flaps its wings among the branches and lets out two cheerful cries.

I look at the man in front of me in confusion, trying to understand what this brand-new word means.

“What is… To be free?”

“Freedom is to do what you want to do and refuse what you don’t want to do—It’s not having to obey anyone’s commands.”

IV. Resolve

The warm yellow sunlight shines through the bright round windows as if coating everything in a layer of golden powder. I lay on the soft bed, stretching my arms and legs.

There are no more heavy chains or squeaking mice. Everything here makes me feel comfortable, unfeigned, warm.

Is this feeling what they call “freedom”?

“To do what you want to do and refuse what you don’t want to do…” I stare at the chandelier on the ceiling, repeating the words Bresse told me back then.

Perhaps my puzzled look made him impatient, as he eventually gave up trying to explain what “freedom” was, rubbing his forehead and sighing.

“Just stay here for now and get better. Once you have it figured out, you’re free to leave anytime.”

If we’re talking about things I don’t want to do… Well, the list would be long. For instance, being locked in a small, dark attic, wearing chains, and training every day…

But what do I want to do?

I adjust my posture and sink my head deeper into the pillow that smells like the sun. Sigh, it’s so cozy…

Perhaps it’s okay to think about these complicated issues later.

“Hey, Panna Cotta! Are you still lying in bed?” A rushed voice sounds from outside the canopy. After not hearing from Bresse for several days, he lifts the bed curtains with a frown on his face.

“Oh… You’re back.”

“Hey, kiddo, won’t you at least go out and stretch a little? If I didn’t know any better, I’d think someone confined you to this bed.”

“Go out…? Alright, then. I’ll go out.”

Almost like a subconscious response to receiving an order, I quickly get out of bed and stand up before I can even process anything, tidying up the ruffled bedding in the process.

“Huh… You’re actually… Wait, wait!” For some reason, Bresse rubs his forehead as if he felt a headache coming. “This isn’t an order. If you don’t want to go out, there’s no need to force yourself.”

Stunned, I stop my movements for a second, lower my head, and think carefully before finally looking up at him again.

“Well… The sun is shining so bright today. I think I want to go out and take a look for myself.”

The spring scenery is beautiful, and the small huts flanking the streets are adorned by colorful flowers that sway in the breeze. I’m sure each one of them has a lovely name. The waves in the river that runs along the street shimmer in golden colors as wooden boats carry tourists across the waters. I watch them mesmerized, and a few throw friendly smiles at me.

Apart from magicians, maybe humans aren’t that detestable.

“You, hand over the Book of the Nether!” A childish voice pierces through the peace and quiet, and that familiar and dreadful name makes my breath stop.

Not far away from me, some children in tattered cloaks wave around wooden sticks haphazardly, shouting to each other.

“Aleister, how dare you steal the Book of the Nether?! Hand it over right now, or I’ll let you taste the power of my magic!”

“Hahaha! I’m not afraid of you! As long as I have the Book of the Nether, I’ll be the most powerful magician ever—Woah?! Who are you?!”

Before I finally come to my senses, I have already grabbed the robes of the child they called “Aleister”.

“Are you magicians? Where is the Book of the Nether?”

“Wahhh—You’re scary! Guhh…” The child seems frightened by my sudden appearance and bursts into tears, leaving me momentarily at a loss. “Uhhh… We’re not real magicians, we were just playing a game. We don’t have the book either…”

“I’m sorry…” I release him from my grip and hastily take a few steps back, unable to look at his face full of snot and tears in my embarrassment.

“Uhhh… The Book of the Nether has been resealed in the Nether Library for some time now, hasn’t it?”

“The Nether Library…”

In the blink of an eye, a decision seems to be made deep inside my heart, like a seed sprouting in spring.

The root of all evil, the source of those repulsive memories, should be destroyed by my own hands. Yes, this is what I really want to do.

To destroy the Book of the Nether.

V. Panna Cotta

The mournful calls of the crows hovering above the pine forest travel far, echoing over the cliffs and in between the needle-like buildings. The steps ahead are illuminated by the pale moonlight, and if you look closely, you can vaguely make out some shapeless debris.

Just as the name suggested, the mysterious castle was a gloomy place that exuded woeful energy—A forbidden site used to seal dark magic, a purgatory that had witnessed countless massacres already.

“This is the Nether Library? Who… are you?” With a bewildered expression, the boy looked up at the woman sitting on the higher steps. However, the latter, unwilling to waste words, pulled her gun out and loaded it, aiming at the unwelcome guest in the pitch-black night.

Bullets rained down and the boy swiftly turned sideways, avoiding the attacks that otherwise would have hit his vital points. In the next second, he leaped up toward the woman and took out a small but sharp dagger from behind his back.

Bang

Before he could make a move, however, he was kicked hard and fell down the stairs.

“Are you a Food Soul…? You’re too weak. The magic stored here is not something you can covet.” The woman lifted her chin with a cold gaze and deftly dumped all the cartridge cases by her feet.

“Ugh—No, I must…” The boy gritted his teeth and stood up, his bemused eyes tinged with crimson like a wild beast. “I must destroy the Book of the Nether!”

The woman furrowed her brows, taken aback, and in those few seconds of hesitation, the boy struck again, even more fiercely this time. Regaining control of her senses, the woman lifted her leg and kicked away the dagger in his hands, casually throwing aside her own gun on a nearby grass patch.

“Then, how about we make a bet…? If you win against me, I’ll let you burn down this entire library.”

The pale moon had hidden amongst the dark clouds, its faint light shined on and off, and even the tired crows had stopped their monotonous cries. Hanging by a thread, the boy laid in the grass, his whole body covered in nasty bruises.

“Goodness, did you really have to be beaten up this bad before you were willing to give up?” The woman shook her head in bafflement, leaning down and lightly flipping over the person on the ground to confirm he was still alive.

Under the dim moonlight, the boy’s torn shirt revealed a patch of skin that was extremely unbecoming of him. In addition to the freshly made blue and red marks, there were countless other thick and horrifying old scars.

Beneath these interwoven hacks, a faint seal seemed to reveal some secrets.

“Who are you…?” The woman’s pupils shrank rapidly as if she was being enshrouded by a dark aura.

Cough… Aren’t you… Going to kill me…?” As if finally noticing the black shadow hovering over him, the boy came back to his senses and struggling uttered some broken sentences.

“Well, I told you… If you lose, you’ll be at my mercy.” The woman’s voice mixed with the night breeze as she spoke, her tone surprisingly gentle. “Then, since you lost, you should stay here and work in the library.”

“……?” The astonished and confused boy was still trying to understand the meaning of “work” when a small medicine bottle was stuffed into his hands.

“This is an ointment for your wounds. Although you’re a Food Soul, using this will speed up the healing process. Speaking of which… What’s your name?”

“Panna Cotta… But I don’t understand, why would you…?”

“Why? Hmm… Let’s say the library happens to be short on people.”

“……”

“Besides, it’s almost impossible to destroy the Book of the Nether. Since you despise it so much, why don’t you try another method?”

“…Another method?”

“That’s right, just take good care of this library—Don’t let the book fall into the wrong hands and not killing you will be worth it.”
