Bio[]

Pine & Crane Longevity is well-read and accomplished in painting and horticulture. After willingly accepting the mission to guard over Elusia, he assists Yu Qilin Tea in governing the realm. He appears to be mature and experienced, but in reality he is an innocent and pure person who is extremely easy to get riled up and agitated with a little teasing.
Meanwhile, precisely because he knows so much, he is a proponent of "slow and steady wins the race". This will often lead to conflicts between him and Yu Qilin Tea on certain matters, but as full of learning as he is, he can never win an argument against what he calls Yu Qilin Tea's "underhanded tactics".

I. Embracing Moon, Refreshing Wind

The midday sun was shining, and the birds chirping in the window. I finished wrapping up a few scroll paintings and headed out to the courtyard.

In the distance, through the half-open main gate came a somewhat-shrill voice, as a man with a toothy smile was saying something with a flamboyant flourish.

It was the person whom I called Attendant.

"My good lady, have some tea. That associate of mine will be along in short order." "Ah, see? Here he is! Better late than never!"

Attendant snatched the package from my hands as quick as a flash as he muttered in a low voice. "Finally, you're here! ...Tsk, but why did you only bring this little. Remember next time to have more ready. The more, the better!"

Attendant was a merchant, but he never allowed me to have a hand in transactions, so all I could do was silently agree.

But then before I exited the courtyard, words from within made me come to a halt again.

"My good lady, this batch of scrolls newly-arrived today all came from the famous Xian Su... Look at this technique and graceful execution... I couldn't pull that off if you gave me a hundred years!" "...If you don't believe me, I'll bet you this whole store as collateral! A hundred gold bars and we've got a deal. How about it?"

Xian Su? Those paintings were done by me for self-amusement. Why would he say they were the works of that famous master? Those were the lies of a huckster...

I thought back on how in the beginning, he didn't have two coins to rub together and would always be frowning. But now that he's flush with cash, he's all smiles. Something vaguely started to dawn on me.

I quickly turned back and pushed open the gate.

"These paintings are merely me taking a stab at copying his style and not worth all that much. Mr. Xian Su has never put a seal on any of his true works. You can inspect it for yourself, good lady."

"Wh-what nonsense are you spouting?! My good lady, please don't listen to this ignorant buffoon's ravings!"

"Honesty is the root of trust. Deception leads to no good end, not in building a business, and certainly not in building character."

The atmosphere in the room grew heavy. Attendant's face shifted through various shades of green and white, but just as he was about to say something, the person sitting on the couch slowly spoke up:

"Oh? This is the first time I've ever heard someone trash their own product. You say these works were all done by your hand?" "I only know that it's common knowledge how intricate and full of endless marvel his works are. You've probably only ever seen a handful of his paintings, and yet you dare to imitate him."

The lady in red squinted her eyes and swept her keen, cold gaze over me. I gathered myself, then met her gaze right back.

"I am lacking in both talent and knowledge, nowhere near the level of this master. These were merely works of imitation, with no intention of counterfeiting, much less of trying to profit off them. "I didn't know there were people who would pass off fakes as the real thing for ill-gotten gains. If I have committed offense, I sincerely apologize. I feel sorely to blame for causing such disturbance and misunderstanding.

"My good lady, don't listen to his nonsense! He... Hey, you little wretch! Are you mad?!!"

The voice to my side suddenly rose in pitch, but I had already concentrated my power in my fingertip, twisting it into a flame.

The scarlet tongues of fire lapped across the surface of the painting, burning up most of it in moments. Attendant cried out and leaped toward it, but all he got was an armful of soot and ash. He shot me a furious look.

"Tsk, you really are a man of action. But I'm afraid what you burned wasn't your painting, but a certain someone's bridges." The woman stroked her folding fan with a slight perk of her brow, giving a meaningful look.

"In this complex world, it is difficult not to be overtaken by desire for profit. I wasn't trying to absolve myself, but this is the only way I can express myself. So..."

I looked at the blazing fire before me. Although the scroll had already been burned to cinders, I could still see the words written upon the painting.

I straightened up with both hands behind my back and smiled at the woman in red.

"Drink deep from the cup, alone with the embracing moon and refreshing wind."

More than profit, I'd rather just have that refreshing wind.

II. Entering Elusia

After that, I was kicked out by my flustered and exasperated Attendant.

Although I did my best to dissuade him, he had made up his mind to cut me off financially.

As I looked at the main gate now slammed shut, all I could do was let out a resigned sigh.

So it goes. If ideals aren't aligned, there is no use in trying to work together.

When I left the residence, the sky was growing dark. The dewy evening was warm and moist. In the light of a glass lantern, a red figure as brilliant as flame appeared in view.

The white-haired woman in red held her hand fan and parted her lips:

"A clean break is best, lest you risk future troubles. Temporary mercy would only fan his flames further." "...?"

"Nothing. I'm only saying, it must hurt to have all that work go up in flames, no?" "Those inferior imitations are nothing to speak of, much less get worked up over."

"That little room of yours was full of that person's works. You really do like him, don't you?" "..."

When I first had the pleasure of being introduced to Mr. Xian Su's works, I found them utterly astonishing. Whether poetry or painting or essay, all were done with style and grace. They were transcendent, expansive, and profound.

This is where my love of writing and painting stemmed from.

If one day I could see the genuine article and perhaps get a few words of advice from the master, then I would have no regrets in this life.

Unfortunately, he long ago went into hiding, and no one knew his whereabouts. With that thought in mind, I couldn't help but sigh with regret and shake my head.

"I wouldn't call it 'liking'. Those heights that the master has reached are worthy of being worshipfully admired." "Then what if I said I could let you see him?"

...

I followed the direction the woman pointed in, heading due East. After passing a vast expanse of peach groves, I saw a mist-wreathed sea. There were no docks around, and there was only one single little boat drifting forth through the fog.

I didn't know for sure what her intentions were, and thinking back, I hadn't even gotten her name, but on impulse, I decided to set foot on the path.

So it goes. I'll just wait and see.

The sea voyage went smoothly, and when I opened my eyes again, I saw a massive, enchanted island built up with ornate and elegant terraces and towers, floating amidst the clouds.

After walking up several flights of stairs, I finally came to a courtyard, but all around there was no one to be found.

A sudden breeze blew, bringing with it a voice speaking at a measured pace.

"What are you standing there in a daze for?"

Light curtains hung down around a pavilion, and the familiar figure in red leaned languorously on a railing, as if she'd been waiting a long time.

Suppressing my shock, I made a slight bow with clasped hands. "...This island hidden at sea abounds with wonder. Thank you, lady, for guiding me here... However... might I dare to inquire if Mr. Xian Su is here?"

The woman laughed more deeply. "My name is Yu Qilin Tea, and as for the person you're looking for — it's still early. How about you solve this position on the go board first?"

Without waiting for an answer, Yu Qilin Tea waved her arm, and a bluish-green jade go board appeared on the stone table.

"...I honestly cannot thank you enough for your leading me here, lady; but there's something I'd still like to ask: is this game a kind of test for your visitors?" "Too much worrying is bad for the nerves. If you wish to know, then let the game do the talking."

Judging by her manner, I was afraid I couldn't refuse.

  • Clack*

An incense burner had almost burned out when the winning stone fell on the board. I relaxed my brow and soon heard a bright and clear laugh.

"You are the second to solve the position so quickly."

"Pardon my idle speculation, but this position was full of intrigue and subtleties, which doesn't seem to be your style, lady. Could it be... this is the handiwork of Mr. Xian Su?"

Yu Qilin Tea did not answer, but fortunately the probing look in her eyes faded substantially.

"I know you wish to see him, but unfortunately he's probably off somewhere cavorting with that stinking dragon. He probably won't be back for a while yet."

Stinking dragon?

"...If that's the case, then I'll come back tomorrow..." "Just stay here and wait."

For my part, I never imagined that this was how I would come to stay on this island...

But day after day, not only did Mr. Xian Su never appear, but I saw neither hair nor hide of anyone.

At least, compared to in the past, it was much more tranquil here at Pinelook Tower. Except for... getting pestered by Yu Qilin Tea several times a day.

Food, drink, go, and competitions of martial arts and poetry — there was always something new to do.

And I knew too that the reason she hoodwinked me into coming here was nothing more than to liven things up.

Gradually, I grew accustomed to those sloshing wine jugs and go stones, and I wouldn't bat an eye at that figure that would pop up out of nowhere while I was trying to meditate.

After spending some time like this, one day a spirit bird that had been sent on patrol came swooping in to inform us that an intruder had come.

When I hurried over, I saw a person that I never thought would appear again.

III. Recurring Disaster

At the time, I didn't know where Yu Qilin Tea had wandered to, but meanwhile that man that I had once called Attendant was following right behind another unfamiliar woman from foreign lands. The woman's expression was indifferent, while the man was looking all around with a look like he was digging for treasure.

"Pine & Crane Longevity?! Wonderful! It really is you! You actually made it to a place like this and didn't try to tell me about it?!"

"...Elusia is shrouded with a spirit fog enchantment. How did you two get in?"

"That Yu Qilin Tea said that there was something I wanted here. As for this person... I don't know her. Just a shiftless tag-a-long, if you ask me."

"..."

The veiled woman suddenly walked off, and afterward rarely showed herself. That left only the man, his eyes a-glow and his neck craning and gawking all over the place, determined to find out if this was some land of treasures.

I explained to him that it was no use. Even if the bond of the contract still remained between us, I couldn't just escort him out of Elusia like banishing an ordinary human. He would just have to find a room and get settled in for a while.

Who would've guessed, a few days later, he was getting more and more domineering and reckless.

"Keeping these things stashed away here is a total waste. If we could move them out, we'd be rolling in dough! If you'd have found this place sooner, then would I have had to run myself ragged with all that work before?"

"My feet are on solid ground now, and there they shall remain. Those ill-gotten gains are no proper way to make a living." "Besides, this island doesn't belong to you or me, so there's no reason to get any wild ideas, much less try to take anything."

"There you go again with your moralizing. You're upright and dependable, but what about that money I earned? You're the one who ruined my business, and I still haven't brought you to account for that!"

As his enraged mutterings droned in my ear, I hid my fists under my sleeves, struggling to hold back my own surging rage.

At any rate, now I understood what that "future trouble" was that Yu Qilin Tea spoke of that day...

"Before I just chalked you up to being an old-fashioned fuddy-duddy, but I never thought you were this thick-headed! If there's money on the table and I don't take it, naturally someone else will. Who cares a fig about those useless ethics and morals!" "And look at you now, still without an ounce of ambition. You can't even handle a human like me. It's truly ridiculous, hahahaha—!"

  • Bang!*

"Pipe down." The sudden, sharp noise brought me back to a shred of sanity. A figure stood not far away, and I couldn't help but feel shocked at the table of broken teacups.

"If you know this scoundrel, then deal with him already." The veiled woman named Pu'er spoke coldly as she withdrew her eyes from the man in disgust.

The muttering man was also scared into silence by this unexpected interruption. As I looked at his face, impolite as always, my heart ran cold.

The way things were going, it was clear that indulging him would only lead to further disaster. Bringing that disaster upon myself alone was one thing, but here in Elusia...

Although Yu Qilin Tea was often a pain in the neck, this was still one of the rare places in the world where I could just enjoy the refreshing wind. I would by no means allow it to be tainted by this scoundrel.

I lowered by voice and rolled up my sleeves, determined to have this out once and for all:

"You have always been unreliable in your promises and unrelenting in your demands. But I am no longer yours to boss around. We have gone our separate ways, and I won't let you drag me into your schemes anymore." "Again and again, you disturb the peace of Elusia and cause no end of trouble. I no longer wish to call you by the title of Attendant. From this day on, I am cutting you off completely. In the future, keep your distance from me."

No matter how this man shouted or pleaded, I paid him no attention.

A Food Soul cannot harm his or her own Attendant, but... that doesn't mean one cannot render one unconscious.

Not until I watched the boat drift with the man out beyond the enchanted fog did my vexed heart finally calm down somewhat. This manner of handling things didn't seem like me at all... since arriving in Elusia, I seemed to have changed a lot, becoming more and more like...

Sigh... if Yu Qilin Tea was to know, I'm sure she would give me a good teasing about it.

"What did you just do...?"

Looking back, I saw Pu'er standing not far away, looking as composed as ever.

"I merely erased his memory... No matter what, knowledge about Elusia cannot be allowed to spread. You..."

"I'm here to pass on a message. Someone's looking for you."

"Looking for me?"

IV. World Silenced

In Flowing Cup Pavilion, the air was wreathed with the aroma of tea, and two people sat apart from each other. One green and one blue, but both graceful in appearance and emanating a sage-like aura.

The next moment, they both happened to cast their gaze toward me. Their eyes were profound, hiding secrets untold.

The atmosphere suddenly grew still and quiet. Feeling the pressure from these two extraordinary presences, I very nearly forgot how to say a simple greeting.

"Pine & Crane Longevity, at your service. I guard over Elusia at the behest of Yu Qilin Tea. Might you two good sirs tell me... why you summoned me here?"

"Heh, Xian Su, after all this time, Elusia finally has a new guest." The white-haired man in green seemed to smile, and his pair of dragon horns was quite eye-catching.

Xian Su? A sound like thunder pounded in my chest. Never had I imagined this wish that I'd held on to for so long would happen to come true here.

"Don't be so reserved. We asked you over here just to have a little chat. After all, my good apprentice recommended you, so I'm sure you must have some outstanding qualities."

Before he even finished speaking, I felt like waves were crashing all around me, and I hardly knew what to do with myself. Recommended? Could it be...

Even though my palms were already in a cold sweat, I tried to compose myself and recounted the events of these past few days.

When I finished, Mr. Xian Su just let out a thoughtful laugh. "Thank you for your efforts. From here on out, leave the rest to your teacher to handle."

"Teacher...?"

This title being bandied about out of nowhere left me stunned, but he was as composed as ever and nodded in satisfaction.

"Your teacher sees great value in your sincere pursuit of knowledge, and you have lived up to your name. You are as upright as a pine, good material for training and cultivation. But more importantly..." "...you can put up with Yu Qilin Tea for this long. It is truly a rare talent that can be so malleable. If you are willing to stay here in Elusia, then from today on you can train with me."

"Pbff, what are you staring for? Whoop for joy or something." The man in green let out a chuckle, finally snapping me back to the present, at which point I made a bow.

"Well, well, what a little party! Now that we're finally all together, today nobody's leaving until we've drunk our fill." Suddenly, a familiar voice spoke up from outside the pavilion, and a streak of red clothing swept past, her brow raised high.

And so, under such serendipitous conditions, I became apprentice to Mr. Xian Su.

Aside from having the fortune to listen to the master lecture, most of the time was spent meditating under the pines or tending the flowers and plants. Occasionally we would put together a banquet, and I'd hear them discussing all things under the sun and affairs of the outside world.

Days came and went, but I didn't feel bored. On the contrary, I felt right at home.

Although the master and the Divine Green Dragon often disappeared without a trace, and Yu Qilin Tea and the Divine Lord would often bicker so much they could overturn the seas, or at least destroy the flowers... ...there was still something unusually tranquil and settling, as if... there was some bond that couldn't be severed.

I thought things would go on being tranquil, but who knew...

People beyond the island squabbled over thrones, stirring up turmoil and endless strife. These winds of change seemed to be just of the moment, yet also to be a long-standing ill.

"The world is in chaos, and each stone is barely holding its own on the board. Can just one stone really change anything? And besides, you've got Elusia." "What of one stone? It'll flip the whole world on its head just the same. As for Elusia, I leave that to you."

...

In the end, I was unable to stop her. All I could do was wait for her to return battered and worn.

For a time, it was like Elusia was half-empty.

Day and night, I watched over the bed of Yu Qilin Tea, who was nearly on the brink of death. I must have sighed who knows how many times.

If I had been a little more firm at the time, perhaps to this day Elusia would still just be the four of us trading poems and drinks, and laughing like old times...

A little later, Elusia returned to tranquility, like the tide goes back out to sea.

But she and I both knew full well that the rains would surely howl again.

And when that time came, I swore to myself I would not back down again.

V. Pine & Crane Longevity

On a mild early-spring night, with a thin blanket of snow rustling softly on the tips of branches, the faint winter air faded away amongst pots of warm wine.

Yu Qilin Tea had gathered everyone for a feast as usual, and perhaps because the air was warmer or the wine stronger, but even Biluochun Tea — who was a self-acclaimed expert drinker — got a little more tipsy than usual.

Pine & Crane Longevity endured the thick smell of alcohol assailing him and rubbed his throbbing temples, silently cleaning up the disarray of the feast.

Suddenly, an arm was slung over his shoulder, and the stench of alcohol spewed into his ear, along with these words: "It's so nice to have such a virtuous and hardworking looker like you with us in Elusia. No telling how many dragon scales the Divine Green Dragon traded for you."

Pine & Crane Longevity's scowl deepened. The table and chair creaked under his hands, and there was an undeniable hint of red blooming on his cheeks.

"Biluochun, if you're drunk, then go back and sleep it off. Stop wagging your tongue." "Aww, are you saying that out of concern for me?"

"I take back what I just said." "Don't be mad~ Oh yeah, you know that pine tree on the terrace of Pinelook Tower? How many years old is that?"

This sudden question from Biluochun Tea brought Pine & Crane Longevity to a halt.

The pale moonlight made the silhouette of that jagged pine seem even more resilient and upright.

"It was planted when I arrived here." "...Its age is the same number of years as I've been in Elusia... and it still stands tall and lush."

"I've heard the stories about you all. All these years, and you haven't changed either. You really live up to your name~"

"...I used to think I'd changed. That I'd become more forgiving of a certain someone's preposterous behavior. But it appears I haven't."

"But isn't that a good thing, to be like an evergreen pine? Staying true to one's heart is no easy feat." "Yeah, although, if you stopped being such a fuddy-duddy about certain things, that would be better~ After all, one hour of nighttime frivolity is worth a thousand pieces of gold. If you keep this up, you'll stifle yourself sick~"

"...Your utter lack of shame has also never changed!!"

Although Pine & Crane Longevity had expected that he wasn't going to say anything pleasing, it gave him a headache all the same. But Biluochun Tea was already giggling and waving goodbye as he walked away, leaving him all alone to clean up the mess.

When everything was ship-shape again, Pine & Crane Longevity returned to his Pinelook Tower.

All the way back, his mind was racing, and by the time he snapped out of it, he found himself underneath the pine tree.

He suddenly thought of that night when the trio parted ways.

A wave of regret came over him, and Pine & Crane Longevity actually grabbed a jug of wine that Yu Qilin Tea had buried on that spring day. The cloudy mist was bracing and cold, and the moonlight filtered down through the pine branches, leaving mottled shadows. He suddenly realized what an empty feeling drinking alone was.

"Of course, here you are. What is it? Trying to compete with the tree to see who lives longer?"

Pine & Crane Longevity fanned away the heavy alcohol smell with a wave of his sleeve, then looked at Yu Qilin Tea's half-smiling face and made a slight frown.

Yu Qilin Tea didn't seem to mind and scooped up a book from the stone table, reading in a mocking tone:

"...Picking an armful of fragrant lotuses, I get so lost in their depths, I forget my way back. Tch, you're in quite the good mood."

"At the time, you said one couldn't come and go as one pleased on this island. Your words still hold true."

"Are you regretting it, little fuddy-duddy?"

"Removed from the world, I'm free to roam my mind. What is there to regret?"

Yu Qilin Tea froze for a moment, then recovered with a big laugh, her eyes glowing like fire.

"Regret wouldn't offer a way out anyway. Come, we've still got a ways to go before we drink up all the wine I buried in the court. Come with me to Mirror Flower Pond for a refill~"

Yu Qilin Tea, now aggressively inebriated, pulled Pine & Crane Longevity along without waiting for an answer.

As she did, there was a sudden, refreshing breeze, and Pine & Crane Longevity quickly stashed the remaining part of that poem in his breast pocket.

"Even from the flowers unfathomably deep, there is still a little boat floating through the water."

He thought of the silhouette of Xian Su standing under the pine.

"I recognize that I can't cling to illusions. A recluse from the world should hold his tongue. If even the Divine Lord was unable to improve heaven, then I shouldn't try to force it either." "This time I don't know when I'll return... I'll leave it at that. You've always been dependable. From here on out, I'll still need your help looking after Elusia."

Just then, he was plunged into the depths of fear, not daring to respond, and still...

No matter how fiercely the mountain rains raged, helping Yu Qilin Tea and protecting Elusia was a call he could not refuse.
