As long as everyone's happy.

Bio[]

A little princess as exquisite as a doll who is esteemed and adored by the kingdom's subjects but has become taciturn and sullen from suppressing her natural inclinations too much. Actually, she has a side of her personality that is just like a normal little girl.

Food Introduction[]

Princess cake was invented in Sweden in the 20th century by the teacher of some royal princesses. It is distinguished by its bright green marzipan skin and pink rose on the top. Below the outer skin of marzipan are layers of cake, jam, vanilla custard, and cream. Its fluffy texture and sweet taste combined with its eye-catching colors are the perfect complement, making it a big favorite of many people.

I. Puppet

What is a little girl made of?
Basically, it's candies, teddy bears... quiet and pretty little things like that.

What about me?

"Princess Cake, you really are getting prettier by the day. Like an exquisite little doll."
"Look, everyone. Her skin is as pure white as the snow. Her lips are as elegant as a blooming rose..."
"She's simply the paragon of beauty for this kingdom's ladies!"
...
I've never seemed to lack for such praise.

From the time I was summoned forth, the King and Queen have told me I would become the most beautiful and most elegant princess in the palace.
Because my beauty and delicate grace would be a symbol of the kingdom's prosperity and flourishing.
It was like... I was this kingdom's mascot.

And precisely because of that, my life was filled with rules of all kinds.

Stepping in puddles on rainy days? No, ma'am. That would get the hem of one's dress dirty.
Picking up a meat pie with one's hands when eating? No, ma'am. That would get oil stains on one's lace sleeves.
Let out a big laugh when hearing something that makes one happy? Also no, ma'am. People would think one wasn't ladylike.

"You are a princess representing the image of this kingdom. You mustn't disregard the rules."
"Little girls must act like little girls. Especially a little girl of your standing."
My private tutor would always say things like that to me.

Act like a little girl...
Actually I never really understood what this "little girl" they talked about was supposed to be like.
Maybe it was the way I was now?

Every morning, my ladies-in-waiting would prepare me a rose-scented bubble bath. After the bath, they would brush my long, curly locks and apply a fragrant, yet unknown essential oil to give it a sleek luster.
My closet was stuffed with puffy dresses bedecked with all manner of pearls, roses, and rhinestones, and every morning a special person would pick out my outfit for the day.
After this long process, I would be sent to etiquette lessons, or to meet with foreign envoys, or perhaps there would be some important parade to attend.

Beautiful, elegant, gentle.
That seemed to be all they demanded out of a little girl.

But...
...what difference was there between that and a doll in a shop window?

A few days back, there was a heavy snow in the royal capital.
Crystalline snowflakes gradually blanketed the city, enveloping the world before her into an endless silvery-white.

I love snow.
I love snow's purity, its softness, and especially how light and delicate snowflakes are.
As they fluttered down, it was like the heavens had sent an infinite flock of white butterflies fluttering down.

And of course, when it came to snow, even more fun was—
"Hee-hee, take that!"
"Alright! I won't admit defeat that easy!"
The sound of children romping and rough-housing in the garden below caught my attention. I looked down and saw several girls my own age having a snowball fight.
They whirled their arms forcefully, hurling their freshly-packed balls of snow. First one would hit you in the head with her snowball, and then you'd hit her on the back with yours.
They chased each other back and forth, letting out shrieks of laughter.

So nice...

"Princess Cake, what are you looking at?"
Sensing that my attention was drifting, my etiquette teacher gently waved the pointing stick in her hand.
"Sorry, teacher. Nothing..."
I reluctantly pulled my gaze away, returning it to the words in the book.

"Only a special image of perfect beauty can bring happiness to the kingdom."
"As long as everyone can be happy, then I'm happy."
All this time, this is how I thought.

But, if possible, I'd like to be like them too, frolicking around in the snow...

II. Bouquet

The snow kept falling.
I hadn't seen such a heavy snowfall in a long time.
The snowflakes drifted down in an endless stream from the firmament, as if they would swallow up the whole city.

As I looked at the flurry of snow out the window, a bold thought suddenly popped into my head—leave the palace.

Sorry, but I so want to be disobedient and willful this one time... just this once.
—I said to myself.

In the dead of night when all was quiet, I put on my traveling clothes and cloak, then took a small kerosene lamp and snuck out.
Because it was a cold winter's night, everyone was huddled inside. The streets were practically empty.
Even if anyone was out, they wouldn't take some pedestrian bundled up in plain clothes to be the palace's Princess Cake.

And so, my leaving of the royal palace was a huge success, and I went north all the way outside the city.

Signs of civilization receded in the distance, and the night grew more peaceful. The snow gradually stopped falling, and the world was just a swath of serene white.
I squatted down and carefully scooped up a handful of snow, afraid that I'd melt it with my body heat.

"It snowed..." I whispered.
With no etiquette teacher around asking what I had said, I suddenly realized I was no longer in the palace now, so I gathered my courage and spoke out even louder.

"It snowed."
My voice still garnered no response. In the distance was only lonely silence.

"Wow! It snowed!"
Then, I let loose completely and yelled to the sky, something my etiquette teacher would absolutely never allow me to do.
I flung the snow in my hand up to the sky, letting it scatter and fall on my hair, shoulders, and dress.

Then, I took off my thick cloak and sprinted around on the pure white ground. Looking back, my footprints were the sole tracks on the snowy ground.
"It's like I ruined the carpet."
I giggled as I talked to myself, without feeling a sliver of remorse. Actually, I only got bolder and took off my patent leather high heels and stepped in the snow. The feeling was just like stepping on a plush carpet.

I wasn't at all put off by the bitter cold. To the contrary, I indulged in the icy winter conditions.

"Phew—"
Finally, I just spread open my arms and legs and plopped into the thick, white snow, making a big angel shape.

How comfy...

In this moment, in this instant, I suddenly felt like I had cast off all my shackles and restraints.
I wasn't a noble princess, nor a kingdom's mascot.
I was just me. I was just a Food Soul named Princess Cake.

"How great if I could have more time just like this..."

Unfortunately, I would have to go back in the end.

"Help... help me..."
Suddenly, I heard a faint cry for help.

It seemed like... someone was there?
I sat up alertly, trying to ascertain if the cry I just heard was real or not.

"Is anyone there? Help me..."
There really was someone! And it was a little girl!

I scampered over, craning my neck every which way trying to find the source of that voice.
Suddenly, I saw a blossomed flower on a cliff's edge. The frail pinkish-red stood out considerably against the empty white nothingness.

In such a frosty scene, it seemed like a square peg in a round hole, or like it would be scattered on the wind at any moment.
And yet it clung staunchly to life.

And next to that flower, I saw a hand clutching tightly to the rock's edge.
Thin and feeble, just like that flower.

III. Drifting Snow

"Hang on!"
I ran over barefoot, having no time right now for any royal etiquette.

"You're gonna be okay, just hang on!"
I plopped down by the cliff's edge and peered over.
There was a girl about my age, her one hand clinging tenaciously to the cliffside while her other clutched a branch growing out of the cliff face.
Even though the branch had rubbed her tender skin raw, her intense will to live overrode that insignificant pain.

"I'm almost got no strength left. Please, save me..."
Crystalline tears perched on the corners of her eyes, and her voice quivered from the frigid cold.

"Don't be afraid. I'm pulling you up now!"
I grabbed her wrist. Her hand was almost as icy as the snow.

"Give me your other hand."
"No, I... I can't move. I can't..."

Words sputtered in fits and starts from her purple, frozen mouth. I knew that her stamina and will must be at their limits.
"It's okay. I'm here..." All I could do was comfort her with pointless words.

Was there really no better tool?
Like a vine or a rope that could at least pull her up safely.

Ah...
Suddenly, I looked down and saw the belt cinched around my coat.
Yes. It was worth a try!

With one hand, I hastily undid the belt and took it off.

"Grab this!"
I wrapped the belt around my hand a few times, then tossed it down.
"You're going to be alright. Trust me!"
I looked with determination into her red, teary eyes, hoping to give her some assurance.

"Alright—"
The little girl reached out a shivering hand, but the next second, the tree branch she was clutching snapped.
"Ah!"
The girl's desolate shriek tore through the dark night's silence. She fluttered in the winter wind like a falling tree leaf.

"Grab it!"
"I got it!"

Luckily, just in the nick of time, she grabbed hold of my belt.

"Okay. On the count of three. One... two... three! Hrrngh—"
"One... two... three, hrnghh—"
I seemed to be pulling for all I was worth, and although I couldn't see myself at the moment, I was sure I must've been red in the face.

"One... two... three, hrrnggh!"
Finally, after a prodigious effort, I successfully pulled the girl up.

"Phew—"
Completely spent, I fell panting to the snowy ground, once again lying face up and making an angel shape. There was nothing ladylike about me now.

"I'm sorry, but are you... Her Highness Princess Cake?" the girl I'd just rescued cautiously asked.
She was obviously doing much better now, except that her body would still shiver from the cold.

So I was recognized after all. It figured...
With things as they were now, there was no need to try to hide.
"Yes."
"It's really true?! I can't believe it. The first time I saw you, I thought I was hallucinating... but now I'm curious, what are you doing here?"

"...Playing in the snow," I said as I turned my head away shyly. When I said these words, my cheeks felt like they were on fire.
A prim and proper princess sneaking out of the palace for a reason like that, and then being found out by a subject. What could be more embarrassing?

The girl, naturally, looked a bit surprised at me, then let out a cheerful laugh, saying, "Whenever anyone in town brings up Princess Cake, they all say she's a dignified and reserved princess. This is a little surprising."
"Oh?"
"I never imagined a princess who was like that all the time would have such a cute side!"
"Do you feel... disappointed?"

The girl shook her head, exclaiming, "Of course not! If it wasn't for you, Your Highness, I might not be alive right now."
With that, she let out another sneeze.

"...It's too cold. Let's head back."
I looked to the east and saw extreme darkness on the horizon.
It was presaged the imminent arrival of the dawn.

IV. Sunshine

Before heading back down the mountain, I put on my leather shoes. My feet had already turned beet red from standing in the snow for a long time.
"Sorry. It's my fault you had to do that to yourself, Your Highness," she said with self-reproach.
"This wasn't your fault."

We walked side by side down a pitch dark path, relying solely on the little kerosene lamp to light up the way in front of us.
The dim light brought with it at least some warmth, and also made us unafraid of the dark night's bitter cold.

"My name is Deva," the girl said enthusiastically to me. "I live in this town."
Deva had neat, short hair and wore clean overalls and warm boots. On her waist, she also carried a little knife.
If one didn't hear her voice, she could very well be taken for a boy.

"Well, Deva, what is it that brought you out here?"
"Me? Because of this!"
She took a little box out of her baggy pants pocket. Upon opening it, a flower lay peacefully inside.

"This is..."
It was the flower that bloomed on the cliffside. I thought back to how impossibly delicate it had looked, and yet also how it managed to blossom in the frigid cold anyway.

"This is a winter rose. They blossom on snowy days. I came to pick it," Deva said as she rubbed the back of her head, apparently a little embarrassed. "Your Highness, don't look at me like that. Mine is a family of hunters."
"Hunters?"
"Yeah! Don't you think it's cool?! Taking a hunting rifle to hunt ferocious beasts..."
Deva started prattling on about the process and techniques of hunting. When she spoke about this stuff, her eyes flashed with a glow that I'd never seen before.

"But my parents don't want me to be a hunter. They think girls shouldn't do that sort of thing." Deva's tone gradually deflated. "I had wanted to pick a winter rose to prove myself. I finally managed to find one, but who would've guessed, when I let my guard down for a second, I'd slip..."
"..."
"Actually, what I wanted to prove to them even more is that girls should never be put into a box." Deva's spirits perked up again. "We all have the right to be ourselves."
Even as cold as it was, I could see a burning, fervent flame in her eyes.

The right... to be yourself...?

"At any rate, in the end you did get your winter rose."
"No, Princess Cake, it should belong to you."
With that, Deva carefully placed the winter rose into my disheveled hair bun.

"For the princess's kindness, cleverness, and bravery."

...

When we got back to the town, the horizon was already the pale white color of a fish's belly.
In the distance, I spotted a worried-looking married couple and a group of villagers around them. The woman was sobbing with her face in her hands.
That must be Deva's mother.

"Mama!" Deva animatedly waved her hands at her mother and father as she shouted, then took off sprinting toward them.
Hearing her daughter's voice, the mother's grief turned to joy, and she wrapped Deva in a tight hug.

"Deva, thank goodness you're alright. Where on earth were you? Your father and I have been up all night!"
"I'm sorry, Mama... I went to pick a winter rose and had a little accident."
"What?"
"But Princess Cake saved me. If it wasn't for her, I may not have made it back!"

Deva turned and looked at me, and all of a sudden, the whole crowd's gaze fell upon me.
"I..."
I felt an urge to hide from their eyes, because right now I truly was looking a little worse for the wear.

My hair was a mess, my dress was stained with mud and water, and my hands were caked with dirt and grime.
A princess like this would surely be a disappointment to everyone.

Deva's parents walked up to me with stern faces, but then to my surprise, they made a deep bow to me.
"Thank you, Your Highness. Thank you for saving our daughter."

Huh?

"That's a real princess for you!" came a cry from the crowd.
"That's right! That's right!"
"Who knew she was so brave..."

A barrage of gratitude and cheers filled my ears. Now, no one could say to me, "Why don't you act like a princess for a change?"

V. Princess Cake

The story of Princess Cake saving Deva quickly reached the ears of the king.

"My dear Princess Cake, you rescued my subject. How should I reward you?" the king asked.
"Your Majesty, if it's possible, I'd like..."

...

Princess Cake and Deva were now part of a hunting camp.

After that incident, Princess Cake gained the right to come and go from the palace freely, and Deva's parents agreed that she could take part in logistics work for the camp, which was an important step on the path to becoming a hunter.

"Deva, here!" Princess Cake called to Deva in a low voice.
"Coming!"
In the grass not far from the pair was a wild hare engrossed in nibbling on grass and clearly unaware of the impending danger.
Deva skillfully drew her bow, took aim, and then there was a *woosh*—
"Got it!"
Princess Cake excitedly picked up their newly-bagged prey and exchanged a smile with Deva.

...

"Oh my, how can this be? This is simply beyond the pale!" In the palace, the etiquette teacher was pacing anxiously in the room. "Isn't Your Highness Battenberg Cake going to discipline her?"

Hearing that, the elegant young woman just smiled and said, "Perhaps you can let Eton Mess try some of those courses too."
"Her Highness Eton Mess?" Hearing that name, the teacher shivered involuntarily. "Never mind. Never mind. A cow might as well jump over the moon!"

Hearing the etiquette teacher grumble and grouse, Battenberg Cake only gave a smirk.
She looked at the glass vase on the table and a bouquet of dew-sprinkled winter roses.

...
What are little girls made of?
Little girls can be made of candies and teddy bears and rose petals.
But they can also be made of courage, intelligence, grit, determination, and pluck.

They are a clenched fist. A powerful majesty. A will more adamant than stone. They are burning tongues of flame.
They are a one-of-a-kind beauty in this world.
